Izakaya Geronimo was near the bottom of my priority places to try as I’ve been hearing mixed reviews about the quality of food. I was curious but I wasn’t moved to try it.
Fortunately, someone decided to make libre here for their birthday so I got to try the place.
I was pleasantly surprised with the food quality and am now inclined to believe that either the first few weeks were misses and they were trying to transition the wagyu studio concept to a more casual dining experience or that the people I know who went here had an overly discerning palate.
The yakitori items were cooked well and I have no complaints. The spice seasoning was just right and the charcoal flavour was well pronounced in the tebasaki and bacon wrapped shrimp. The chicken thigh held its own and was above par in cooking for dark meat items.
As to the rice, the shrimp fried rice was nothing special so the stone pot rice might be a better pick. The curry rice however had a certain smoky taste that worked well with the spices used.
The Geronimo Fried chicken was nothing special but this does not register as minus points since I had a neutral opinion for fried items in an izakaya.
Cocktails seemed okay and I was happy with my mojitos. It appears that most cocktails are either served in a wine glass or a metal cylinder that looks like a narrow shaker.
For parking, there is a parking lot just across the street called Crescent North.
Rating this visit with five stars as the Yakitori selection was impressive. I look forward to my second visit to try the other grilled items and...
Read moreFood: so so and overpriced for what they offer. Personally felt that the food was not seasoned well.
The good food: hanging beef tender was juicy and well seasoned. The wasabi salsa was sooo good! I wish they had more of these intricate sauces. I would come back for this. akami was fresh and price is decent wasabi: idk why but their wasabi was super good and tastes like those you get when eating in japan
The meh: Temakis are overhyped and lacked flavor. Also wished the nori was crispy for an added texture but it wasn't. Popcorn shrimp was ok but again, could be better if texture was crispier with a bit of a bite and had a more sweet and spicy kick to it. corn tempura lacked salt and the corn wasn't sweet or ripe. I expected them to use the sweet high quality juicy japanese corn but it seemed like plain unripe corn. Also not sure if there was cheese inside but if there was, i couldn't taste it.
Drinks: they have a good selection of alcoholic and mocktails so that's a plus.
Ambiance was immaculate and acoustics were good. So i would say this is a great date place if you're not looking to eat good food but rather have a nice conversation in low light ambiance.
Service was also impeccable! Loved our server Saint!! Super attentive and had a great attitude!
But overall, food isn't something...
