LUKULLUS | Chmielna — Restaurant in Warsaw

This pastry shop is one of the best things about Warsaw! Basically a Gesamtkunstwerk of pastry art, elegant interior design, urban atmosphere, old Warsaw history, and coziness.

Of all Lukullus locations, this (to me) has the best interior. You sit on the iconic Hałas 200-190 chairs, surrounded by terrazzo, ceramics, wooden panelling in the style of mid-century which is the flagship style of Warsaw. Little details like the statue in the window, the table with magazines, the brass vases on the tables show how thought-through the place is.

The hot chocolate (served in large metal pots) is one of the best I've tasted (and I've tasted a lot of hot chocolate...).

Almost every kind pastry was brought to perfection. Millefeuille, Hungarian cake (I recommend to let it sit at room temperature for a while), cheesecake with Grand Marnier, everything with pecan nuts - all perfect. The "creamy cheesecake" is a bit too salty. I didn't appreciate the Florentines (after you try those from a certain legendary hotel, nothing else will satisfy you...). Seasonal things like faworki or miniature doughnuts are great. I wish there were more fruity cakes in the warm months. And I wish they start making apple strudel again... :-(

The coffee is a bit too much on the hipstery acidic side. The tea selection could be more diverse. The staff is fine, efficient, could be a bit friendlier.

I've lived in Poland for quite many years now, I am Italian so I got used to the Polish standard of service being different 9/10 times, but not here. I was served by an enthusiastic young guy with glasses that was SO nice it made my day, so much so I am posting this review a week after being served. Never before have I been served with such kindness in Poland, it honestly was better service than what I came to expect in Italy. He was kind, explained to me everything I had asked him, and even offered tips to see Warsaw (I live in Poznan), bundled with a smile. The food was GREAT and tasted fresh, which is also something that is rare to find for me, but that's also due to personal tastes. Nonetheless it's the only shop where my personal tastes were matched AND service was great. I will literally come back here every time...

Od wielu lat jestem stałą bywalczynią wszystkich lokali Lukullusa – regularnie odwiedzam je z moim synem, z ogromną sympatią i uznaniem dla jakości oferowanych produktów oraz atmosfery. Niestety, dzisiejsza wizyta w lokalu przy Chmielnej była dla mnie bardzo nieprzyjemnym i rozczarowującym doświadczeniem.

Byliśmy świadkami sytuacji, która nie powinna mieć miejsca w żadnym miejscu publicznym – tym bardziej w kawiarni, która przez lata kojarzyła mi się z kulturą i smakiem. Przy jednym ze stolików siedziało dwóch panów z trzema małymi psami, które leżały rozłożone wokół, zajmując przestrzeń wokół sąsiedniego, wolnego stolika. W pewnym momencie do lokalu weszła kobieta z trójką gości z zagranicy i uprzejmie zapytała, czy panowie mogliby odsunąć swoje psy, aby można było usiąść obok.

Reakcja panów była skrajnie agresywna – zaczęli krzyczeć i wyzywać zarówno tę kobietę, jak i mnie, gdy w jej obronie poprosiłam o spokój. Padły obraźliwe słowa, m.in. „zamknij się głupia babo” czy „tępaczki”. Kobieta poprosiła o pomoc obsługę, która niestety stanęła po stronie agresorów, tłumacząc, że lokal jest „przyjazny zwierzętom”. Nie odniesiono się ani słowem do faktu, że goście kawiarni zostali zaatakowani słownie, ani nie podjęto próby załagodzenia sytuacji.

Pani zapytała wprost, czy wobec tego ma opuścić lokal, bo nie ma gdzie usiąść, a obsługa – ku mojemu zaskoczeniu – odpowiedziała, że tak.

Jestem ogromnie zawiedziona i poruszona tą sytuacją. Zwierzęta w lokalach gastronomicznych to dziś norma – sama jestem ich miłośniczką – ale żadne „psie przywileje” nie mogą usprawiedliwiać agresji wobec innych gości ani braku reakcji ze strony obsługi. Kawiarnia powinna być przestrzenią gościnności i szacunku – również (a może przede wszystkim) dla ludzi.

Mam nadzieję, że lokal przyjrzy się tej sytuacji i wyciągnie z niej wnioski. Dziś – po raz pierwszy – wyszłam z Lukullusa...
