Birou Bar — Restaurant in Angra do Heroísmo

After a late flight into Terceira we stopped off at Birou Bar as it was recommended by our hotel receptionist. We ordered the Alcatra sandwich with homemade French fries. It was our first experience of Alcatra and it was so good that we went on to order it everywhere we could on the island. We even returned to Birou Bar to have it again. Only comment would be that they have the windows open in the small restaurant as it gets very hot in the bar and as there is a smoking area directly outside, the bar fills with the smell of smoke and they won’t let people sit upstairs to avoid the smell. One of the wait staff also gave us a lot of attitude when we asked to sit away from the window to avoid the smell which caused us to leave - not excellent - and the reason...

If I could give zero stars I would do it. We have been waiting for 45 minutes and only the water arrived. The beer we ordered was never seen. During this waiting, the waiter was sitting with some friends, eating and drinking a beer (maybe ours). When we asked about the food he told us some stories about long preparation of a dish which we actually didn’t even order. Then he realised that something went wrong and the order probably never went through. He wanted to offer the starters but we were too irritated (and it was nearly 10 pm) and we left. The service was VERY slow on the Monday night in July that we visited. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Many people make a reservation, but we walked up and got seated at 7pm. I ordered the Alcatra sandwich and the meat was tender and delicious. The mixed salad 6€ had cabbage, lettuce, corn, tomato, red onion, green pepper and was topped with a vinaigrette. My boyfriend had the steak with mustard sauce. The steak 16€ was tender and the sauce wasn’t a super strong mustard flavor. We finished with an ice cream sundae 1.5 €.
