We were in the Porto Mare hotel and this restaurant was next to our hotel. It serves typical Madeiran food and I really enjoyed it! Before our trip to Madeira I would never have thought that I'd eat and even enjoy a meal where fish is combined with fresh banana (from Madeira, of course!) and passion fruit sauce. The remaining vegetables seeing in the picture supplemented this meal!
We ate at this restaurant on the first day and the portion was so wonderful that I had to get back on the last day. My boyfriend, who hates bananas, ate steak on the first day. I tried to overwhelm him throughout our vacation to taste this Madeiran food, but at first he didn't want to. However, I ate this portion (called scabbard fish or Espada, I guess) at other restaurants as well, but at this restaurant, I think it was the best. On the last day my boyfriend said; "Okay then, I guess I'll have to taste that dish that you've been talking to me about our whole vacation as it seems to taste so good", and so we ordered the same dish on the last day. And yes, my boyfriend, who had last tasted a banana at some day at the elementary school (now aged 23), ate the whole dish empty, saying; "Well, yes I have to admit, that was good".
And finally, of course, it should be mentioned that the service and the local people everywhere were SO nice and this restaurant made no exception. I've been traveled a lot and I have certainly not been in such a good mood anywhere else in Europe during my whole vacation, just because the local people are so incredibly considerate, polite and friendly. The locals come to us, they come to help etc., but never stutter. Many times as we walked past the eatery, we were asked if we'd like to eat, but we might have just eaten so we answered; "No thanks, we just ate, but maybe another time!" and EVERY TIME we were praised and wished a good day. No one tried to force us to eat or stop. This was a truly admirable feature to note in many different...
Read moreI has been eyeing this place for a week, and I finally did it my last night here on the island! I was so sad that I took this long to try it because it was AMAZING! I have tried all the regional dishes of Madeira and decided to try something different here and it did NOT disappoint. It was delicious I was mostly surprised by how amazing the salad was that I am planning to come back in the morning just for it!
If you are in the hotel area and want a nice night out come here and enjoy a wine or a poncha! I tried both and it was the perfect way to...
Read moreWell what can I say.. mediocre wine, very over priced. They weren’t busy and got food order so wrong. Starter I ordered was sauté prawns, hot spicy prawns with a lump of dill on top. Main, I ordered steak Diane with chips and salad, my hubby ordered his steak with chips too. Both came with mash and veg, I sent mine back. Hubby had eaten his when I got mine which was NOT steak Diane but a very hot chilli sauce. Told they could redo but lost the will to live by then. Not busy but very faulty towers. Disaster and don’t...
