I've been a loyal customer at SushiMari Lido since 2020, and it's consistently been the best sushi spot in Funchal. Many of the staff recognize me because I always emphasize my severe shellfish allergy. However, today, at SushiMari Lido, I was served a plate with shellfish. When I informed the waitress, she took my plate to the person at the counter. Shockingly, he removed the fried sushi with his bare hands. The waitress then brought the plate back to me. I expressed my concerns, explaining that I saw what had happened, and I no longer wanted to eat the remaining sushi. I raised the issue with the manager at SushiMari Lido, who apologized. But, to my surprise, another staff member delivered my check and suggested that next time, I shouldn't eat the food if I could see it contained shellfish. I tried to clarify that I didn't realize it was shellfish until I bit into the roll. He failed to address how the food was handled when it was taken back. Thankfully, I had taken allergy medication before coming, so I was okay. However, this gentleman seemed to imply that I was trying to get a free meal. What bothered me most wasn't the mistake of including shellfish; it was the unsanitary handling of the food with bare hands while the waitress held the plate. We visited sushimari 3 days ago and we ordered 3 menus. We specifically said that one of the menus was for our friend who is very allergic to all nuts & tree nuts. My sister even said: “please, he dies!!” Just to emphasize the situation as we know some places in Madeira put peanuts on sushi.
We received the meals and we only noticed after 10 mins of starting eating that the 3 of us had the peanuts sushi roll (the peanuts come inside the sushi so we didn’t thing either of us got that). Once I realized that one of the pieces had nuts, I quickly took his plate out of the way to avoid a disaster.
Imagine if he had eaten that one by now or pieces even close to it or even some sort of cross contamination.
The employee apologized once, they removed that one menu from the receipt and also offered to give us a new menu. We didn’t want it of course. We stayed there for 20 mins more to see if he was feeling okay. Not once the employees or manager came to speak to him to check if he was alright. No manager on site actually came to acknowledge the situation or the chef itself which is so weird to me.
We spent the whole vacation day on check, just in case they were any cross contamination situation or he accidentally eaten something.

Starting from the begining where waitress did not know anything about fish, set could not be half-warm and half-fresh, so we ordered two sets (24 and 16 pcs)
Then sushi looked pretty decent. No giger. Just 2 scraps. However when we started to eat, they included in the pieces chicken, gyoza dunplings as also sushi pieces
Under sashimi I found second splashed wasabi on which stood the pot
Everything cost 50 eur just with 1L bottle
To sum up - think twice as there are a lot of other restaurants where you can pay 50 eur for something better such as tuna steak or any other fish for 2 people...
