If I could give zero, I would. Single woman on her own. No drinks menu provided so as I saw the Coral tap, I just ordered that.
Ordered scabbard fish with prawns and Pernod sauce. It turned up with a brown sauce. Since a curry sauce was also an option and after tasting what seemed like a weak gloopy Chinese curry sauce, I assumed there was a mix up so queried. (I have since seen a picture on here of a serving with the curry sauce and it was exactly like that!).
Despite it having zero aniseed taste I was assured it was correct. I tried again and wasnāt convinced so I was told it would be changed. It came back. Still gloopy and brown and tasting pretty much the same.
I tried a bit more and was considering whether I just eat it anyway when the server (I now know owner) who was scrutinising me from the bar said loudly to the next table āshe drinks beer what do you expectā.
I found my voice and replied āshe also hearsā.
He continued to talk loudly across the restaurant to me saying, I could order something else if I wanted but I was upset by this point as the whole restaurant was staring so I declined and said Iāll just pay for drink. He said I didnāt need to pay for anything and since I was already very upset and humiliated by now, I said fine and left in tears.
Iāve travelled for over 15 years on my own. Iāve got used to different attitudes to solo female diners but this is the first time anything like this has happened.
To add, the accompaniment to the dish was insipid vegetables and I witnessed the man serving (the only one in the place) insisting on cooking the sizzling rock steaks/tuna for guests even when they said they were fine to do so, and itās part of the experience of the dish for the guest.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe location (next to savoy) made me think it was a nice modern restaurant, like some other places on that street... The interior design- good job, waiters - good job, very friendly. The chef - disapointed. A tuna steak was served with a salad leaf + tomato + grated carrots(!) + bolied cartots(!) +boiled cabbage(!). Doesnāt make any sense and it looked amateur. Tuna itself was good but you canāt go wrong with it, everything else was average. My work canteen serves more presentable meals and it costs 3 times less⦠next table chicken was served with the same combo. I ordered a bottle of rose wine, but wasnāt given a cooler. My advice to the restaurant- stop serving this terrible veg-combo-salad with every meal and review your menuā¦less of everything but better quality is better. Serve good quality fresh veg. Buy coolers and proper salt and pepper...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe best meal I've ever eaten! My partner had talked about the famous beef on a stone, and so I found this restaurant and loved the look of it. The gentleman that served us was welcoming and friendly, and he made us feel very at home. While we waited for the beef, we were given fresh warm bread and garlic butter which was fantastic, and then the beef came, the gentleman showed us how to cook the beef on the hot stone, and it was the most incredible, melt in the mouth steak we've ever had. We were blown away by the experience and the taste. We will definitely come back to Madeira again and we will visit again for another wonderful experience! Highly highly recommended to visit here, this is a must...
