We have eaten here three times during our holiday and thoroughly enjoyed every meal. The owner who serves and Miguel are very friendly and accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. Having read the review by the solo female, who gave a very negative review, we were there that night and she clearly put on a very good performance. Rue, the owner was clearly concerned as to the reaction she gave and didn’t appear to react in the way she described! She spent time relating her story to the restaurant next door! We would highly recommend the restaurant and the food

Not to be dramatic - i eat steak ALL the time in America (Houston, TX). But this was the best steak of my life 😭 I’m normally a ribeye girl, but the Filet steak (beef on hot stone) was so freaking tender and flavorful, it about melt in my mouth. I will be thinking about this steak for 37 days and 37 nights ā¤ļø our server Ruy (pronounced Hu-ey) was so delightful, friendly, amusing, and quick with service. The other server was super thoughtful and split my friend & I’s dessert for 2 instead of just giving a dessert with two side plates - small but thoughtful gesture 🄹

Simply superb! We went twice whilst on Funchal on holiday as it was so good the first time. As others have said, the steak (or pork) on hot stone is sensational. It's brought out and cooks right in front of you, is superbly tender and absolutely delicious. What makes it next level is the service, you feel welcome from the moment you step in (or walk past!) and the maitre'd is charming, attentive and really funny. Absolutely top marks, and a must visit if you're in Funchal.

If I could give zero, I would. Single woman on her own. No drinks menu provided so as I saw the Coral tap, I just ordered that.

Ordered scabbard fish with prawns and Pernod sauce. It turned up with a brown sauce. Since a curry sauce was also an option and after tasting what seemed like a weak gloopy Chinese curry sauce, I assumed there was a mix up so queried. (I have since seen a picture on here of a serving with the curry sauce and it was exactly like that!).

Despite it having zero aniseed taste I was assured it was correct. I tried again and wasn’t convinced so I was told it would be changed. It came back. Still gloopy and brown and tasting pretty much the same.

I tried a bit more and was considering whether I just eat it anyway when the server (I now know owner) who was scrutinising me from the bar said loudly to the next table ā€œshe drinks beer what do you expectā€.

I found my voice and replied ā€œshe also hearsā€.

He continued to talk loudly across the restaurant to me saying, I could order something else if I wanted but I was upset by this point as the whole restaurant was staring so I declined and said I’ll just pay for drink. He said I didn’t need to pay for anything and since I was already very upset and humiliated by now, I said fine and left in tears.

I’ve travelled for over 15 years on my own. I’ve got used to different attitudes to solo female diners but this is the first time anything like this has happened.

To add, the accompaniment to the dish was insipid vegetables and I witnessed the man serving (the only one in the place) insisting on cooking the sizzling rock steaks/tuna for guests even when they said they were fine to do so, and it’s part of the experience of the dish for the guest.

Would not recommend...

The location (next to savoy) made me think it was a nice modern restaurant, like some other places on that street... The interior design- good job, waiters - good job, very friendly. The chef - disapointed. A tuna steak was served with a salad leaf + tomato + grated carrots(!) + bolied cartots(!) +boiled cabbage(!). Doesn’t make any sense and it looked amateur. Tuna itself was good but you can’t go wrong with it, everything else was average. My work canteen serves more presentable meals and it costs 3 times less… next table chicken was served with the same combo. I ordered a bottle of rose wine, but wasn’t given a cooler. My advice to the restaurant- stop serving this terrible veg-combo-salad with every meal and review your menu…less of everything but better quality is better. Serve good quality fresh veg. Buy coolers and proper salt and pepper...

The best meal I've ever eaten! My partner had talked about the famous beef on a stone, and so I found this restaurant and loved the look of it. The gentleman that served us was welcoming and friendly, and he made us feel very at home. While we waited for the beef, we were given fresh warm bread and garlic butter which was fantastic, and then the beef came, the gentleman showed us how to cook the beef on the hot stone, and it was the most incredible, melt in the mouth steak we've ever had. We were blown away by the experience and the taste. We will definitely come back to Madeira again and we will visit again for another wonderful experience! Highly highly recommended to visit here, this is a must...
