I think about the tortas de Guimarães from here at least once a week now that I have tried them. They are perhaps the only Portuguese pastry treat that I truly like, in the whole country.
I don't even find them particularly sweet, like other people say. I've had much sweeter.
We came in to get a tea and to try a few pastries when we were visiting the town. The gentleman working there was so nice, so helpful and informative. He told us all about the different types they have and made suggestions. I initially didn't want the Tortas de Guimarães because they did not seem like something I would like, especially with the mention of sweet potatoes in the sweets.
I was so wrong! So flaky, buttery, light, and sweet! Absolutely beautiful balance of sweet and savoury, and the texture was divine. Such fantastic pastry. I can see why they are a must-have when visiting Guimarães.
We also tried some of the others, and liked the all, but not as much as the tortas de Guimarães. Tea was served nice and hot, and there's a cute little sitting section at the back.

WOW! All are fantastic! Each have different flavors and textures but all brilliant. Not too sweet and very enjoyable. Were so glad we tried them all. Highly recommend you try a few.
Dare I say these rival and surpass the famed Nata de Belém that are so popular in Portugal. My love affair with almonds might be to blame. ;-)
I can only hope I can find these back in the US. I might have to learn to make...

This small pastry shop is just off from the main historic square. All the pastries are so good and I am not a huge sweet fun but love their pastries, in particular Rochas da Penha, which is light and brings lovely smell of almonds. We had some at the shop with pingos. It was really nice time. We also bought some small jars of jams, all of which are also great and have home made taste. Next time we will buy more pastries to share with our friends at home. The mum and daughter team are sweet and very...
