At one point we were queuing with lorries to enter the port. Then we were in the middle of a building site. ‘This is mental’ said Sarah. ‘Tell me about it’ I replied. Walking here is not for the faint hearted. Probably best to get a taxi. We finally arrived at ten minutes to midday to an empty restaurant and a cold super bock. By 1 o’clock it was throbbing with Portuguese families having a right old time. We made friends with our waiter (Pravash from Nepal) and he began bringing little samosas and meaty croquettes for us to nibble on. They’re the ones that they surprise you with on the bill like most places in Portugal. They’re also delicious and cost about a euro. The olives were the standard large portion and excellent. Neither green nor black but somewhere in between. The bread decent and fresh even though in little packets. We had a plate of ham that was the solid munching meat that separates the Portuguese stuff from the Spanish. Still excellent, but less refined. This suits the vibe. We ordered a bottle of bone dry white from the Douro (steered by Pravash). This was perfect and at the pricey end of their list (a mere 22 euros) We ordered their famous clams, a salad, roasted peppers, red mullets (pleural) and the fava bean special. The clams were superb. Juicy, sweet and soupy, with half cloves of garlic bobbing around to nibble on. Not at all sandy today. Pravash took our remaining bread away and brought back toasted bread to aid with juice mopping. What a guy. The salad was excellent. Fresh and crisp. The roasted peppers were generous and everything a roasted pepper should be. They were also something like 2.6 euros. Moving on. One of the reasons we were drawn to this place was not just the fresh fish we had seen on all the pics but also the huge piles of super green spinach that appears to be served with everything. This spinach was insane. Proper old leaves that had lead a good life before being harvested. Not the baby spinach nonsense that much of the world has become accustomed to. The mullets were beautifully grilled by a man called Hugo. Hugo looked like he’d just broken out of a gang and found a new life grilling fish. He was excellent at grilling fish and a lovely chap too. The mullets tasted sweet and a touch too fishy. A proper half a lemon helped and few boiled potatoes finished the dish. Pravash next brought to the table a large saucepan full of fava beans. Braised slowly with chorizo, blood sausage and pork ribs the beans were soft and with only a pleasent hint of bitterness thanks to a morning spent simmering. We were told there was enough to feed 2/3 people and this was certainly the case. The beans cost just 9 euros. We had a classic Portuguese custardy caramel thing called pudim to finish and a slice of biscuity cake. A glass of port too. To summarise: this place feels like a sureal adventure, the service is brilliant (expect proper euro waiters who don’t fluff you up) and the food wonderful. It also cost just 100 euros for the two of us. A definite highlight of our...
Read moreGreat food, slow service.
The restaurant is located at the port of Lisbon, quite interesting. The views aren't that great as large cranes and containers block the river and 25 de Abril bridge. Plenty of free parking at the side of the restaurant, which is great.
Service was really slow and kind of rude at times (not our main server though), entrees took like 1h and the rest of the food another one and the order was a bit mixed up with even one dish forgotten.
But the food... We mostly ate fish and it was really good, worth the wait? Well, that's up for consideration but it was great. Well cooked, seemed quite fresh and it was well seasoned.
I can recommend this restaurant only if you're not in a hurry and if temperatures outside are...
