Whelp…I’m officially hooked on pastei de nata. Manteigaria is well-known as one of Lisbon’s most popular fabrica de nata shops, and for good reason — they’ve truly mastered the art of creating the most incredible pastei de nata, with a perfectly creamy, custardy center, delightfully bruleed top, and the most incredible, flaky crust. They do run a little bit sweet compared to most other Portuguese shops, but it’s still one of the most incredible pastries you’ll ever have. And, when paired with a nice bitter espresso, it’s perfect. As you walk through the streets of Baixa, you’ll be lured in by the incredible scent of pastei de nata baking away. Eventually, the sweet, buttery fragrance will lead you to this small, but often crowded shop, where you’ll have the joy of seeing a giant pastry case of exclusively pastei de nata, as well as a window into their back kitchen — if you’re lucky, you’ll even get to see the magic come together as they whip up a new batch! They have a narrow counter along the window into their kitchen, where you can stand and enjoy your pastries and coffee. However, there isn’t any seating, so most people will only stick around for at most ~15 minutes.

Overall, it's a great place, specialising in pastel de natas BUT these weren't the BEST I've tried while in Portugal. I like the concept of eating while standing at the bar and getting to watch the pastry chefs get to make these sweet treats right in front of you. They were also very friendly and welcoming to taking videos or pictures of them, which isn't easy to do while trying to focus, I imagine! In terms of the pastel de natas, I like the slightly more 'burnt' ones so they weren't as crunchy or caramelised to me BUT they were still beautifully made and I loved the creamy feeling. The one thing that really disappointed me was the coffee, which would have ruined the entire experience if I've not gone in for another pastel at the end... Oh, and one final thing which I found odd was that they charge 2.50 for takeaway. Anyway, I'd still give these guys another go when I am next in Lisbon and I'd still recommend for a good pastel de nata experience :-)

I accidentally stumbled across Manteigaria on a weekend away in Lisboa whilst with some close friends. Instantly drawn into the shop with its charming carved mahogany front. It was spotlessly clean inside and you could instantly tell it is a slick operation. The professional staff were perfectly arranged in a highly efficient production line protected behind a clear screen. We opted for the traditional Pastel de Nata and a glass of port. We then decided to sit on the outdoor terrace watching the world go by as the queue for Manteigaria grows with both tourists and local folk in the know. I have to say this was by far the best Pastel de Nata I have ever tried. A thin crispy base with the smooth creamy custard. It is a must when visiting Lisboa. So much so… I bought a box to bring back to my family in Londres (wahey! Learning the lingo).

The small and busy Manteigaria store, next to Largo de Camões, has gained a larger space in the Ribeira Market, where the best custard tarts in Lisbon come out of the oven all the time. The formula for success is very simple and doesn't need to be locked up in a safe with seven keys: artisanal production, the quality of the raw materials used – whole eggs, quality butter instead of margarine, sugar as needed, no preservatives – ; and the process of opening the puff pastry which is all done by hand and requires several months of training to be done well. The result is a crunchy and crunchy dough and a cream with just the right amount of sugar, which is why Time Out fell in love with cakes and made them rise to the top of the top of the best places to eat in Lisbon on Tripadvisor. Pastéis de nata (1€) or in boxes of 6 (6€).
