Whelp…I’m officially hooked on pastei de nata. Manteigaria is well-known as one of Lisbon’s most popular fabrica de nata shops, and for good reason — they’ve truly mastered the art of creating the most incredible pastei de nata, with a perfectly creamy, custardy center, delightfully bruleed top, and the most incredible, flaky crust. They do run a little bit sweet compared to most other Portuguese shops, but it’s still one of the most incredible pastries you’ll ever have. And, when paired with a nice bitter espresso, it’s perfect. As you walk through the streets of Baixa, you’ll be lured in by the incredible scent of pastei de nata baking away. Eventually, the sweet, buttery fragrance will lead you to this small, but often crowded shop, where you’ll have the joy of seeing a giant pastry case of exclusively pastei de nata, as well as a window into their back kitchen — if you’re lucky, you’ll even get to see the magic come together as they whip up a new batch! They have a narrow counter along the window into their kitchen, where you can stand and enjoy your pastries and coffee. However, there isn’t any seating, so most people will only stick around for at most ~15 minutes.

Manteigaria: The Best Pastel de Nata in Lisbon If you’re searching for the best pastel de nata in Lisbon, look no further than Manteigaria. While many bakeries claim to make the best version of this iconic Portuguese pastry, Manteigaria delivers perfection every single time. What sets their pastéis de nata apart? First, the balance. The crust is incredibly crisp and flaky, shattering beautifully with each bite. Unlike some places where the pastry can be too thick or soggy, Manteigaria achieves the ideal texture—light, buttery, and irresistibly crunchy. Then there’s the custard: smooth, velvety, and just the right amount of sweetness, with a deep caramelized top that adds a subtle bitterness to balance the richness. Another highlight is that they make their pastéis de nata fresh throughout the day. Every time you step into Manteigaria, you’re almost guaranteed a warm tart, straight from the oven, filling the air with a mouthwatering aroma. You can even watch the bakers at work, folding the dough and pouring the custard, a sign of their commitment to...

After reading so much about this place, we have it a try. We came here in a busy day, and we were surprised with how quick and efficient the service is despite how busy it can get. I was told that in a busy day they sell up to 6,000 pastéis de nata!!

Prepare to make a line. Don’t worry, it will move fast! About the pastel de nata itself, we wrote out comente below:

*The crust was impressively flaky, snapped when you bite. Very scrumptious and buttery!

*Filling: reminded me of the creamiest cuts I’ve tried, I could taste condensed milk, vanilla, he egg wasn’t strong at all. Velvety a bit liquify. Almost difficult to eat the few bites.

*Top layer: it is fully set, torched to perfection. No burnt taste whatsoever!

*Size: bigger than the average I’ve eaten. With 2, you’re already very full!!

Price: fair. good price/ quality ratio !

Extra remarks: the coffee was very nice the service was EXTREMELY efficient and fast The staff was attentive. Sweet,...
