Pavilhão Chinês or Chinese Pavilion Chinese Pavilion - Lisbon's Hidden Treasure Head for the district of Principe Real and a street called Rua Dom Pedro V and enter an amazing bar which is full of intrigue, quirky, fascinating, mind boggling, meticulous, fun and overwhelming all at the same time. See the photo below for a view of the exterior of Pavilhão Chinês, it's totally uninviting and hard to see any identifying marks as to it's name or what it is. In fact it looks like a derelict building but believe us when we say that once inside it will blow your mind and you will never judge a book by it's cover again! We are not quite sure what time Pavilhão Chinês opens at but we believe that it's safe to say that it will be open at 6.00 pm, so go there after that although this doesn't necessarily mean that the door will be open. If the doors are locked but there are no shutters on the windows then simply ring the doorbell and somebody will let you in ... yes really! When inside you will enter a large room with an an array of toy figurines, practically from the floor to ceiling. As you walk through to the bar you will realise that this is only one room of many and at the very back you will find a stunning pool room with another ornate bar. The collection ranges from action men, tin soldiers, dolls, ships, air force helmets, the list is really endless and it is worth studying the shelves as you will find some crazy stuff. Whoever collected these pieces has spent years doing so and I dare to say that it must be one of the best collections of it's kind in the world. If you are there with guests, why not have a little competition and find Roy Keane of Manchester United and Ireland fame (he really doesn't fit into this collection but somehow found his way there). The waiters are dressed in red waist coats which gives this bar an austere feeling but relax and enjoy the experience, don't be afraid to wander around and take photos or enjoy a game of pool. Whatever you do .... do visit this bar, it's a MUST SEE and is one of Lisbon's...
Read morei am sorry to write a non positive review, but i feel compelled after this experience. It is beautiful and a weird must-see museum on its own merit, however the cocktails were not good and somehow expensive. we ordered three classics: old fashioned, sidecar and whisky sour. all of them poorly executed and wrongly garnished/presented. if you do not want to keep reading this, it is all you have to know. i will now write in detail everything that was not accurate with these drinks. first, the old fashioned. it really pains me to see this drink watered down, with a fake-pink bright cherry (only suitable for piña coladas if you will) and the wrong liquor in it :( it was a blended scotch (nothing against this type of whisky, it is just not the correct one) the angostura was invisible to the eye and palate, and dont know why, lemon and orange wedges piled in. got all things wrong. second, the sidecar. its supposed to be cognac, they use brandy (nothing against this choice either) the brandy was impossible to taste, only the lemon and sugar were present, and again the bright pink cherry (why?) dissapointing to say the least. third, the whisky sour. the foam was flat, really flat, i doubt that was real egg white in it… i guess some bad substitute. it was served straight in a v coupe, not my favorite presentation but thats ok i guess, the bright pink cherry was obviously there to join the disgraceful party. and for lisbon, am sorry, charging 10€ per drink is expensive and enough to get something done properly. this is a constructive critic, i hope the bar can make amends to...
Read moreCool visual identity but over-hyped and overpriced (like everything else in that area), with a poor service and communication. I've been to Pavilhao Chines tonight, for the first and last time. I wanted to order a simple cheese sandwich, with 4 cheese options available. I briefly talked over those options with the waiter and he suggested me to have an open sandwich with 3 varieties of cheese displayed in the plate so that I could try them all out and serve myself with the bread slices. Suggestion accepted. Then to my surprise, when I got the bill, I was charged 3x the price of the original sandwich I meant to order. What the waiter suggested was actually a different type of dish, with a different price and size, and he was not clear about it. He didn't call the dish by its name nor brought that detail to my attention. I explained the situation to the manager but he washed his hands of it. The waiter insisted that he correctly described to me what I was gonna be served with, I insisted the price and dish category difference was unclear, and no one came up with a solution or at least an attempt of a service recovery. I ended up paying the triple-priced bill. I value my money and the transparency of the services I use. The miscommunication might have been unintentional (still questionable since the waiter and I share the same mother tongue and nationality) but its management was poor and reckless. All I got was disregard. I'm not coming back and I don't recommend this service. There are plenty of better places to explore...
