Santa Maria — Restaurant in Lisbon

This is 100% a local spot and highly recommend. The serving sizes are massive so be ready for that. When we got there it was early so the place wasn’t full but as we sat eating over time it began to fill up. The initial servers didn’t speak much English but were able to work with us really well and were extremely pleasant to trust o talk with us. Later as the night wore on more of the english speaking servers showed up and we also had great conversation with them.Everyone was joking and laughing together despite not being able to fully understand each other at first but we all happily got through it and we had one of the best meals you could imagine. I used to live in Portugal and my girlfriend used to work nearby the restaurant and ate there frequently and this is how I know the restaurant. Very nice food (fish & meat) grilled to your liking at very affordable prices, Nice red house wine for €3,75 a bottle. A typical restaurant where indeed the locals go. Open til late most nights. The only thing that could be a bit of a put off is the the well lid complete white tiled interior (floor and walls) but apart from that, I always enjoyed it and so did my girlfriend. Authentisches portugiesisches Restaurant

Das Restaurant liegt neben der Universitätsklinik Santa Maria in Lissabon. Da auch unser Hotel SanaMetropolitan, in dem wir auf Einladung von TAP 2 Nächte wohnten, nur wenige Schritte entfernt liegt, haben wir dort nach einem langen anstrengenden Tag spät abends gegessen- eine sehr schöne Erfahrung. Als wir das typische Restaurant mit Bar im Vorderraum und Speisesaal im Hinterzimmer betraten, erinnerte uns das Ambiente an die Zeit unserer ersten Portugal-Reisen vor 35 Jahren. In der Kühltheke lagerte die Auswahl an frischem Fisch und Meeresfrüchten. Der einfach eingerichtete Speiseraum und die Papiertischtücher gehören zu den einfachen ehrlichen Lokalen in Portugal dazu. Auf einen Bogen-Tischdecken-Papier werden auch die Tagesangebote der Küche mit einem Filzstift geschrieben - der wird dann anschließend ins Fenster geklebt. Solche Restaurants gibt noch viele in Lissabon, sie befinden sich abseits der exklusiven Geschäfts- und touristischen Flaniermeilen. In Restaurants wie dem Santa Maria essen die einfachen arbeitenden Bewohner und Studenten, Rentner und einige Rucksack-Touristen. Wir wurden sofort als Fremde erkannt. Mit einem "Boa Tarde" gewannen wir die freundliche Aufmerksamkeit des Personals, das nur geringe englische Sprachkenntnisse besaß. Die Bitte "Ementa em Português" brach das Eis entgültig. Obwohl das Lokal die Küche um 22.30h schließt, wurde unsere Bestellung freundlich aufgenommen. Das frisch gegrillte Thunfischsteak mit Quetschkartoffeln und Mangold war ein gut zubereitetes traditionelles Gericht. Das Secreto vom Porco Iberico war ebenfalls gut zubereitete portugiesische Hausmannskost. Am Ende des Tages sanken wir erschöpft und zufrieden in die bequemen Hotelbetten gleich nebenan.
