A new park that resulted from a change in the street layout and the absorption of leftover spaces around the buildings.
The new park layout is the result of a design competition. The winning proposal aims at bringing back the memory of a water line that used to run accross the site. The concept follows a new trend in green area design in Lisbon, in which an ecological function is promoted and affirmed, and lives along other more traditional urban park functions.
There are several "moods" in the park, as it interacts with the different existing buildings and contexts. There are children playgrounds, dog parks, kiosks, a subway exit (Praça de Espanha), sitting areas, benches, paths and art features (and the monumental arch). In the future, a bridge crossing over the streets will allow a quick pedestrian connection to the Gulbenkian Garden.
The plantations are mainly wild local ground covers, bushes and trees adapted to the local climate. The "creek" line will reveal a change of the vegetation through time, as it concentrates underground humidity (and helps mitigate runnoff rainwater), the lake provides water to insects birds and other animals and ducks are usually seen in it.
In the future the surrounding buildings might open up shops facing the edge of the park. As of now it is a pleasant new green area in the city running around...

Also, I saw big rats running around in the afternoon. It doesn't create a nice atmosphere for hanging around by families with children, or really anyone, for that matter. I've been in many Lisbon parks, but this one was the least attractive. Also there is much noise from the big...
