The first place in Portugal where I went to eat and you guys set the bar high! When I asked for a table for one, travelling solo this time, I got a very apologetic look that there was only place at the bar. It was definitely rush hour for lunch but I didn't mind one bit, preferring to sit at the bar when I'm on my own even. With no clue about Portuguese food I ordered what was on the menu as a local dish, a shrimp and bread soup, some grilled Iberian pork and a local beer that was recommended to me by the bartender. The pork was delicious, not too dry and not charred anywhere, but it was the soup that I enjoyed the most. It was finished, with the final touches steered through it, right in front of me guaranteeing that it was still steaming hot and completely fresh as they served it. It wasn't the most refined looking dish I've ever seen, but it was incredibly tasty with well-balanced salty and sweet flavours. The idea that it was a local dish made the experience even better. I took my time eating it, chatting a bit with the bartender as well as just reading a book as they left me in peace contemplating the first day of travel and resting a bit. Bar Tolo is a small place, and when you can try to stay on the ground floor for food as the vibe there is more cozy than the one on the upper floors. They can get very busy but the wait was worth it.

Cela partait pour être une belle soirée, malgré le temps pluvieux. Lonely planet le conseillait, entre autre pour la terrasse panoramique sauf que celle ci était fermée et ne donnait de toute façon pas sur la mer mais sur les toits ! Le jeune au bar semble un peu paumé voire stressé et nous demande d'attendre. Une jeune fille dynamique et souriante arrive et nous installe à l'étage. Très cocon, très chaleureux ! Nous décidons de prendre une soupe du jour et des beignets de poulet en entrées. Le carpaccio de cerf n'était plus disponible, j'ai donc pris un tartare de boeuf. Mon amie a pris celui au thon. La soupe était délicieuse, les beignets eux étaient refroidis et plus très croustillants. Le tartare de boeuf a un genre d'aller sans retour niveau cuisson, du coup il est tiède et pas très assaisonné, les frites sont froides. Le tartare de thon de mon amie quant à lui est rance et acre. Je lui déconseille vivement de le manger rien qu'à l'odeur. Nous avertissons la serveuse que le poisson a tourné et elle nous certifie qu'il est frais du jour, ce que nous ne remettons pas en cause, juste le fait qu'il a probablement pris un coup de chaud et qu'il est impropre à la consommation. Elle nous affirme que c'est ainsi qu'il se mange et que nous ne connaissons pas le thon ! Vivant près de la mer, nous avons quelques connaissances en poissons... Elle a certes proposé de remplacer par autre chose, que mon amie a forcément refusé, échaudée... Puis plus personne pour finir le repas ! Nous avons terminé notre vin, sommes descendues régler, faute d'avoir la carte des desserts. La serveuse nous tournait le dos, "semblant" très occupée à rien. Le jeune paumé et stressé du bar nous a tendu le ticket, comme s'il ne voulait pas s'approcher de nous, pour retourner discuter avec le cuistot qui lui nous a royalement snobé ! Pas un mot d'excuses, pas de café offert, juste le plat déduit de la note, ce qui était la moindre des choses... assez déçue par cette attitude et cette mauvaise foi, c'est vraiment ce qui a gâché l'ambiance de cette soirée... Évidemment que nous n'y retournerons pas !!

The food here is really exceptional and that is the only reason I’m rating this 5 stars because in the end, that is what you’re looking for in a restaurant: great food. The staff we got was incredibly rude, and I suspect that because our party had foreigners in them. I’m a local from Porto, but I was with my partner and a friend who are both not Portuguese and I could tell the girl who was serving us wasn’t interested at all in having to speak English and was just having one of those days. Other than that, it’s a cool looking spot with a cozy atmosphere both inside and outside, located in a wealthy and quaint part of Porto, Foz.

After getting ZERO service at two seaside bars (wasted an hour waiting, but enjoyed gorgeous sunset) - stumbled upon this tiny, adorable place. Sat at the bar since I was alone. Adorable, smart, funny, kind bartender was perfect antidote to angry, overstretched waiters at tourist posts on the water.

He made me a cocktail to order w/fresh lemon juice! Was attentive but not hovering. Towards the end of my dinner we had a great conversation about Porto. For a very young (guessing 20's) man he gave me quite an education about the rapid changes of the past 5 years, his hopes and fears about the future.

Food was excellent and not overpriced. I enjoyed local tuna ceviche served with finely sliced red onions, cilantro and mango served in a half mango shell with chips (think small corn chips w/seasoning). I also tried sausages in puff pastry with honey mustard sauce drizzled over - yum! Perfect meal of tapas and I was starving whenI arrived.

There are all but 3 tables in outdoor area (best spot minus direct access to the bartender). One communal table inside with a few other small ones (2 tops). About 4-5 bar stools, me and one other large man dominated the space do super cozy!

Pretty big deception : we went there on beginning afternoon sunday 27.03, politely asking for a table. One girl was nice (a young, big girl), trying to find a solution, telling us to wait 20 min, but the other one (a short, brown haired nervous girl) suddenly appeared and mubbling that there was at least "40 min waiting" and when we say we will think to wait, she rudely and agressively said "wait or not, do as you want it's the same" in a very disrepectful manner. The same tone she used 3 min before when we asked if the balcony was open (and she kind of use the same violent tone to the customers already on table when one of the lady said that she didn't order this beverage but another).
