Bread&Brunch, Artisan Bakery — Restaurant in Porto

The bakery itself is beyond excellent. Some of the best bread in town, and a few food items that might be the very best (for example, the cheese bread).

The atmosphere is very peaceful, with adequate decor. Sole exception is the overhead lights at night, that are rather aggressive and migraine-inducing, especially over the central tables. The space could be greatly improved with upwards instead of downwards lighting.

The service is... bad. I won't say terrible because the staff is rather lovely. Seriously, they're really nice. But not very competent, or perhaps rather inexperienced. You'll easily wait over half an hour if ordering at the table, which is acceptable at a restaurant, but not at a place that has no complex preparations (at least none that I have ordered over a dozen visits, I'm talking about meals comprising a glass of milk and two pieces of cheese bread for example). The staff looks slightly puzzled over what they must do and how to use their tablets. They constantly double movements and wander around, there's zero economy of movement. I'm starting to wonder if there's someone in charge or if they were trained at all.

Worse, they try to be both a cafe and an order-at-the-counter bakery, with different request lines, when they're clearly not prepared for that. If there's a waiter exclusively assigned to each of the services, it's not apparent. This results in people at the tables being served well after several people who entered after them, but who ordered at the counter, and all of it while some staff wanders around doing something else. The clients really don't seem to be the priority.

I'm not sure if they're trying to emulate traditional cafes, but if they are, it should be kept in mind that those only work through the incredible efficiency (and often brusque manner) of Porto's traditional waiters. They'd be better served through a model where everybody orders at the counter, like the bakery next door (which has equally inexperienced and slow staff, but whose model compensates for it).

I ended up writing a lot because I wanted to leave advice for improvement. For potential future costumers:

Uma desilusão.

Começou por ser um sítio bom, com preços acessíveis, várias opções boas no menu. O espaço já foi acolhedor, agora é vazio, frio. A padaria é boa, o serviço deixa muito a desejar.

Desde há uns meses para cá perdeu toda a qualidade que tinha. O menu ficou mais pequeno e mais caro. O preço dos mesmos hamburguers explodiu, custa o mesmo que numa hamburgueria com metade da qualidade. E ainda acabaram com os menus de almoço acessíveis.

Já cheguei a esperar quase 1h por uma tosta e se eu precisava de uma prova da falta de cuidado no atendimento, esteve no último brunch que lá pedi. Pedi o brunch simples, e qual foi a minha surpresa quando o tabuleiro chega á minha mesa com uma fatia de queijo com bolor. Pouco mas visível, e grave. Depois de me queixar, o tabuleiro foi levantado, levado para os 3 funcionários analisarem e voltaram com exatamente o mesmo tabuleiro. Disseram não conseguir ver, quando é claramente visível. Recusaram-se a admitir que era bolor, não trocaram a fatia de queijo, e ainda me disseram que não era bolor, era "casca do queijo". Não sei que queijo fatiado compram, nem quanto caro é para não poderem sequer trocar uma fatia de queijo. Ficava mais barato trocar a fatia do que perder um cliente. E ainda que fosse casca ou a parte de fora do queijo, não me parece aceitável servi-lo na mesma. A própria cor do queijo dá para ver perfeitamente que estava aberto há dias.

O fiambre do brunch também não era fresco de todo, com um sabor mau e seco. A única parte que se salvou do brunch foi o pão e o scone, as únicas coisas que valem a pena neste sítio, mas felizmente há mais opções de padarias bem perto.

O espaço tinha tudo para ser dos melhores da zona. É triste um local destes ter perdido tanta qualidade numa questão de poucos meses. E é inaceitável tratarem os clientes...

I don't know if this was just a one-off, but when three of us arrived for breakfast at 8:30 on a Saturday morning, the kitchen was still closed, so we couldn't have any of the dishes that required cooking (such as egg dishes). No explanation was given by the wait staff, and there was no indication on the menu that breakfast items were available only after a certain time. If a restaurant opens at 8 am, then all the breakfast items should be available...
