Last weekend was the 23.ª edição do Festival da Caldeirada e do Mar, and when I was reading through the menus, I saw that coelho was on the menu and had to try it!
We came here for lunch on Sunday and had both the festival dishes: Caldeirada de Peixe e Coelho frito com amêijoas com arroz de favas.
Both dishes were very fresh, flavorful and creative, and great examples of how amazing Portuguese food can be. The Caldeirada de Peixe was a mix of different fresh caught fish, each delicious in their own right, but they all came together in a warm and colorful display of the ultimate seafood dish. The molho was so flavorful on its own, we mopped it up with the fresh baked bread to savor every drop.
The Coelho frito com amêijoas com arroz de favas - I haven't had rabbit this good since France - perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. We both also agreed that the rice with fava beans was the best tasting rice that we've ever had anywhere. Seriously, it was that good! I'm guessing that it was cooked in the juices of the roasted rabbit? Not sure, but it was unforgettable.
I must mention the drinks, as they were made with fresh fruit (not artificially flavored syrup) and adequately strong - things that can be hard to find in a country filled with so much fresh fruit! They were excellent!
For dessert: Triologia de Laranja: Gelado de laranja e poejo com Torta de laranja e Bombom de laranja. Very fresh and homemade - I loved tasting the orange rind in the ice cream and the lightness of the tarte, mixed together with the chocolate was a perfect blend of flavors and textures. So yummy!
Lastly, the owner(?), who was our server and bartender, was so warm and friendly, juggling multiple jobs while keeping on top of multiple guests - She was great!
Highly recommend if you're in the mood for some excellent...
Read moreWe came in on a late Saturday afternoon in June 2023. The place seems to be run by an elderly couple - the lady made us a super sangria with red wine, bread was served with some dips, all of which had a very home-made taste which we loved. We ordered octopus fritters and grilled sardines - both were amazing. Sardines served with a side of grilled potatoes and octopus with a side of rice cooked with tomato sauce, garlic etc. everything was quick and tasty. We are here just for a few days but already decided we are...
