I used to go to this place around 2013-2014. For reasons which escape me, I hadn't gone back in ages before deciding to grab dinner there with my wife in April, 2017. I kept thinking over the dinner, "Why had I stopped coming to this wonderful, wonderful place?"
If you're in DOha: this place might seem like a bit of a time capsule if you've been watching how restaurants evolved in Doha since the heady days of 2010. It's a very simple outfit compared to, say, the Gordon Ramsay affairs in the St Regis next door or some of the places that have opened on the West Bay. What it does though, it does very well. The seafood is incredibly fresh and is very reasonably priced. The lamb, too, is good but not the place's selling point. There are also some purely vegetarian options but they are reliably not the stars of the show, although everybody should order the spinach pie (haters can die: I know it's not made with fresh spinach but it still tastes nice). Basically, it's what a British tourist took back from repeat visits from Greece, but a very sympathetic, cultured tourist. It goes without saying: the menu has not changed one bit, I could recall most items from three years previous.
The prices too are excellent, and particularly the wine list. Two people, sharing a main course of fish and four or five (generous) mezze-type platters along with a good bottle of wine can expect to pay less than QAR 700 (~ US $200). There is outdoor seating for when the weather is nice and often live musicians, too. Definitely love this place; I regret all the meals I neglected to have there. Go for the high quality, decently priced and portioned food but none of the...
Read moreBy a country mile, of all the good hotels I’ve been to in 40 years, the worst restaurant experience my family have had. Poor from start to finish. Had a booked table for myself, wife, three children and parents. The inside is that small that we got told we have to sit outside in Doha summer heat. The best they had to attempt to keep us cool were some cheap fans with no actual functioning AC in them. Asked if we wanted to water as we sat down, weren’t bought any until AFTER our entire order and drinks had been brought to us. Undercooked food that we had to ask for better cooked versions of. Then, the musicians took our ‘fans’ away and no staff made any effort whatsoever to rectify the issue. Two of my children actually fell asleep at the table as the main course took over an hour to arrive (which they never do, especially when they are hungry) and it wasn’t even that busy…By the end of the meal (nearly 2 hours later) I looked inside and a few tables we were told we couldn’t use were vacant. I pointed this out whilst I paid the overpriced bill. The manager tried to come to me with excuses, which I was disinterested with. Too much too late with their efforts. As I peeled my children off their chairs to carry them to bed, they finally tried to move the fans to a suitable distance from us. Absolutely PATHETIC. Do...
Read moreIt was a nice restaurant and staff of course very nice. Food was also nice so that was all fine for us. One issue I have is the smoking - it’s everywhere in the hotel. It’s awful. Even if your inside you smell it. Kind of ironic that in countries like this they curb alcohol but half the restaurant is riddled with cigarette smoke. Another issue is I feel the communication like many parts of the hotel is not clear. The bill was over the expected price. The tomahawk was 560QAR per 1.5kg. We had a 1.4kg which was made clear. So why charge us 560!? The drinks were over priced too. I asked for Cointreau in my margarita which the guy said might be slightly dearer and isn’t a big deal, but they charged me separately for the spirits. Combine the charges and each margarita ended up at 104QAR instead of maybe 75 for a standard. That’s not slightly dearer, that’s over 25%. At 1287QAR things need to be right. My wife and I are not oil merchants, we work hard for our money so we value what we buy. Things need to be clearer, especially in a hotel like this in Qatar where prices are extraordinary on a world scale. Mildly disappointing despite a nice dinner. It just puts a damper on...
