We went back to Glenda’s after a very long time. My last experience was okay nothing great, the last time we had the Prego roll and salmon cakes, the Prego roll was not bad but the salmon cakes were extremely dry. Since then we have gone back for cakes and biscuits which have been okay nothing to rave about. Unfortunately this time we thought let’s try the burgers as they were highly recommended by the lady serving us, what a disaster, the burger patty was over cooked full of sinew, lacked flavour. The patty was so hard I could hit someone with it and cause damage and the chips served with the burger were drenched in oil, greasy, they were not even all evenly shaped and size chips- Some were very large, some were very thin, some were very small it is weird. The one thing most kitchens can manage to do properly are burgers and if not burger then at least the chips. We also bought a small orange flavoured sponge cake, it was extremely dense, the sugar syrup had crystallised on top of the cake. The cake itself no favour. The sugar syrup had been taken too far hence caused the crystallisation on top and no one bother to do it when the cake was still warm, no one bothered to poke the cake with a skewer so the syrup could sink in and make an extremely dense cake a bit light. Woolies Madeira tastes thousand times better. I am definitely not going back, the quality of the restaurant has gone to the dumps, the floor of the restaurant was also dirty. Stay away! I am sure there are better deli kitchens in...
Read moreGlenda’s is my go-to local where I take people that I like! I am never disappointed by the eclectic and colorful furnishing or the warm “come in, sit down and get a load off” greeting or the always excellently prepared food and libations on offer.
When Claudia flies from the USA to visit, when Mr Jane needs an oasis to fuel his creative spirit, or when I simply need a friendly place for a get-it-off-your-chest chat with Pinky, then Glenda’s is a no-Brainer.
Nhlanhla will remember your favourite drinks and preferred dishes and Baba always has time to check on your wellbeing. Service is slick and the specials board a lovely surprise, usually of seafood in season. The preparation of the sea bass is sublime and the mussels in wine so very fresh and more-ish.
Sunday lunches are reminiscent of childhood with roast chicken, crispy pork belly, a glass of bubbly and the ring of warm laughter. Talking about bubbly, you can order by the glass! Good wine by the glass? Definitely. Not forgetting the cocktails and Glenda’s special margarita. Yes! But be warned, it has a kick like a mule.
Cakes are an interestingly diverse selection. The petit fours are divine, and the pastry chef knows her choux from her short. All kinds of brownies and sometimes fruit bread too depending on availability....
Read moreI made a lunch booking on Friday 10 Feb for Valentines day. I explained to the person taking the booking that it was for a very special occasion, my son was getting married in the morning on Valentines Day and we were going to celebrate over lunch. I asked for a table outside. On Monday, I called to increase the number of guests and to change the time. Again, I mentioned the special occasion and discussed the champagnes that were available. On the way to the venue I called to add another person to the table. When we arrived I announced myself and said that I had made a booking. They hurriedly started to push tables together. Another staff member remembered the booking and said that my table was outside. There is no connect with the inside tables and the outside tables. She indicated to a number of unoccupied tables and said "sit anywhere"! The tables were covered with stained, insipid tablecloths with not a single table setting or decor. They looked much like you'd find at a school bazaar or on the side of the rode at a vendors stall selling vetkoek! Not one person, in all the times that I had called, thought to mention that the outside tables were unsuitable for a celebration meal. What a huge...
