I have dined here twice before. Both visits have been highly disappointing considering the standard of food in South Africa, and the cost of a meal at the restaurant. Although I must admit the side dishes, drinks and basic customer service is good, where the shop is supposed to be strong (with their steaks) I have been really let down.
I normally order a 500 gram sirloin cut from a non fatty section, or at least a piece that the fat will be on the edge so I can have my steak blue. When I ask for blue I believed I was asking for a steak that that is at room temperature, but seared very quickly at a very hot temperature on all edges, as this is normally what I receive anywhere in the world (and elsewhere in South Africa) when I order a blue steak.
On my first visit half of my steak was cooked reasonably rare, but it definitely could not have been called blue, the other half was so well cooked through it almost represented a broiled steak, it was grey from edge to edge. The outside was grey with a couple grill marks on it. My work colleagues on the night had enjoyable meals and I assumed it was a one off and ignored it.
This time (13th Feb 2017) I made it very clear to my waitress I wanted a blue steak, that it must be uncooked in the middle, but seared at a very high temperature on the outside, she assured me the staff would know exactly what I meant by that. Once again I got a rare steak, not blue as ordered when it arrived on the table, it was cooked lightly on the outside in a similar fashion to the first time making me assume the chef did not have the grill hot enough before trying to cook the meat, and therefore having to leave it on for too long to seal the outside.
Considering the meal and drinks for four people came to R2000 including tip, I was highly disappointed. Not in an effort to dodge the bill, I explained to of the wait staff how disappointed I was with my steak but no one bothered to offer to bring the manager so I could talk to them about it further?
In comparison I recently took four of my work colleagues to The Wombles in Bryanston for steak and got THE BEST service and meat I have ever received in my life. The steak I asked for was approximately 900 grams, but had not a slither of fat inside, only along the outside, it was perfectly cooked with a dark seared outside and inside was blue at a perfect room temperature. This meal came to a...

I recently had a terrible experience with Batcher shop in Johannesburg, and I feel compelled to share it with others to prevent anyone else from going through the same ordeal.
I made a significant purchase at this establishment, totaling ZAR 4000, which included four whole fillets that were supposed to be expertly cut into steak sizes and packed with ice bricks for a long flight to Dubai. My expectations were simple - quality meat, proper packaging, and a smooth transaction. Unfortunately, Batcher shop failed me on all fronts.
Upon my arrival in Dubai, I opened the package to find the meat warm, with no ice bricks in sight. It was utterly disappointing and unacceptable. The entire purpose of purchasing the ice bricks was to ensure the meat stayed fresh during transit, and that promise was broken.
To make matters worse, when I contacted the shop to address this issue, the manager's attitude was shockingly poor. Their lack of concern for a paying customer's experience was evident. They displayed an air of arrogance, seemingly proud of their shortcomings and indifferent to my dissatisfaction.
This incident has left me deeply disappointed, not only in the quality of service but also in the complete disregard for customer satisfaction. Batcher shop's lack of accountability and customer care is disheartening, and I can confidently say that I will never set foot in their store again.
I hope this review serves as a warning to others who may consider shopping at Batcher in Johannesburg. Please be cautious and think twice before making a purchase there. You deserve better service and respect...
Read moreOn 15/03/2018 my wife and I decided to meet friends for dinner at The Butcher Shop and Grill in Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton. We did not have a booking but the female at the front desk said she could accommodate us. We had asked for a table for 2 in the interim, as our friends were late. We sat down and were given our Menu's. The waiter came along, I cannot remember his name, as he did not introduce himself, he asked what we are having. We had ordered the Lamb Wors for starters and some water as I needed to take my medication due to the flu. Whilst eating the bread, he asked what we having for mains, at this point we informed him that we are only having the lamb wors for now as we are expecting 2 others. He told us to move to the bar area because we cant ''just eat the starters at this table". Table 82.
We had no problem at all. We asked the lady at the bar, If she would please bring the bread from table 82, she informed us that ''the bread is only offered to those eating a main course" This was utterly rude, and we had the decided to leave as we were being treated as though our money was not good enough there.
We have been to the Butcher Shop on many occasions and thus I refuse to be treated the way we were last night. This is totally unacceptable.
To add on to this, the service over the last few visits has seriously deteriorated and the owners really need to do something about this. The waiters are totally unfriendly and not welcoming at all. I would honestly think twice about visiting this establishment again as their waiters and reception are in dire need of training and better...
