We recently had a very disappointing experience at 1989 Plettenburg Bay. Initially, we tried to book a table telephonically, only to be informed that they did not take reservations. However, upon arriving at the restaurant, the doorman was exceptionally rude and insisted there were no available tables for us since we hadn't booked in advance - despite us explaining our earlier conversation about no bookings being allowed. The problems didn't end there. The food we ordered looked promising on the menu, but when served, some key ingredients were missing from our plates, leaving us dissatisfied. The service was shockingly unfriendly and slow, with our meals taking an unnecessarily long time to arrive. To make matters worse, we were asked to finish up and leave even after requesting the Bill already, making us feel unwelcome. Overall, this experience left a sour taste in my mouth, and I have no intention of returning to 1989 in the future. It's truly a shame when such issues overshadow what could have been a pleasant dining experience. I hope the management addresses these concerns to improve their service and ensure all customers feel valued and respected.

Very nice positioned restaurant overlooking the main street though Plett. You can sit here and watch the world 🌍 go by and you have a small view of the ocean 🌊. They have a lot of alcoholic beverages to choose from from drafts to gin and very nice looking cocktails 🍹 The food is very well presented and the burgers have unique combinations, they also cater heavily for the vegans and vegetarians. We had the god father burger and the Mexican burger but with a beef pattie instead of the veg burger pattie that came with it ...note the pic shows the veg burger as they did not change it as was planned but they did quickly rectify this mistake by bring my burger 🍔 back out with the beef pattie. Over all it was a very good experience with the staff being very friendly and helpful, only thing I will say is that it's very pricey as the bill was over 500 rand but even being so I would come back. Another note the side 🥗 with the burger 🍔 could of been more as it was a bit bare.

Wow. This is the kind of place that makes me rethink my previous five star reviews. Literally the best burger in South Africa, and second best that I’ve had in the world — Father’s Office in Los Angeles would be number one, but even that has slipped recently. The Nineteen 89 burger was cooked to perfection. My girlfriend said that the food was cooked with love. I agree. She had the coconut chicken and prawns. We also had two fresh pressed juices. Delicious all around. Service was very friendly, but I think they were a bit understaffed for how busy it was (Sunday night). Dan was really a great waiter and seems to be a great guy. Will I come back? DEFINITELY. I might not drive the Garden Route road trip again, but next time I’m in Cape Town I think I’ll rent a car and drive 6 hours to Plett just for the Nineteen 89 burger! Other reviews mentioned that they don’t have a liquor license, but they encourage you to bring your own wine or beer. Not a problem at all.

Terrible customer service!!!

The manager/owner should really learn about customer service, professionalism and common decency.

We are in town for holiday and it's our first time here in Plett. We made a reservation for 17:30 but arrived just before 18:00 due to us missing a turn and got a bit delayed on the road.

Yes I understand we were late but when we arrived the restaurant was still very quiet with minimal reserved tables thus leaving plenty available tables. We could also see from the door, (as they did not want us to enter) that our reserved table was still available.

But while we are at the door, no one comes to assist us at the door nor make any eye contact. It took more than 5 minutes for someone to actually acknowledge us at the door.

Finally the manager/owner came towards us to help another group of patrons who arrived and now standing with us at the door. While she is chatting with them I overhear they did not make a reservation. But they were helped very quickly and kindly - to our reserved table.

Now, the manager/owner decides to take the unpleasantness a little bit further by starting to wave her watch at us saying we late and she doesn't want to hear anything from us because she doesn't want to deal with anyone's attitudes. Pointing to my pregnant wife, who did not utter one word. At this point I was flabbergasted because I could not understand what could warrant such rudeness.

Yes we were late and if she had said with good attitude that unfortunately they can't help us for whatever reason we would have left disappointed but not disgusted. She treated my family like we are the scum of the earth. And I would definitely not recommend anyone to go there. Their service and treatment of customers ...

We went to Nineteen 89 for some late afternoon drinks. The service and the cocktails were really good, especially the Champagne Daiquiri, we also ordered some tequila shots.

Everything was fine until our bill arrived. When we went through our bill, we realised that the price on the bill for the tequila shots was not the same as the one on the menu. It was almost double the price that was listed on the menu.

I am aware that the price of Tequila can be quite volatile or changes regularly.

But the issue we had is that when we reported the price difference to our waiter, we were then advised that they had not updated their menu prices yet but the system has the updated prices for the Tequila and that they should have informed us of this price difference but they didn’t, all they said was, “Sorry we didn’t inform you of the price change when you made your order”.

Then they made no effort to try and rectify the issue or come up with a solution. If I was informed of the price difference from the beginning I would have still made the same order, but to not even try and reach a solution or offer the shots for the advertised price on their menus was really disappointing.

I understand we all make mistakes and forget things but it was not our fault and we still ended up paying the full bill with tip.

Would rate higher but due to the incident with the bill we...

I am writing to express my disappointment with my recent visit to your restaurant. My family and I have been loyal customers for many years, always looking forward to the generous and delicious portions. However, our recent experience was far from satisfying.

After a two-year gap, we returned to find that the portion sizes have noticeably decreased. The salmon piece was disappointingly small, and the fillet steak, which was supposed to be 250g, was much smaller than expected. This was particularly disheartening given our long history of enjoying ample servings at your establishment.

Additionally, when we inquired about the portion size of the salmon, our waiter was unable to provide an answer. We then requested to speak with the manager to give our feedback, we were told that we could speak to the owner. Unfortunately, the owner was reportedly too busy in the kitchen to address our concerns, despite the restaurant being less than a quarter full at the time.

We have always cherished our visits to 1989, but this recent experience has left us feeling disappointed and undervalued as customers. We hope that you can address these issues and restore the quality and service we have come to expect.

Thank you for your attention...
