We visited on Friday afternoon for lunch. We made reservations but it didn’t seem they expected us at all (based on the look of the staff’s faces). We could choose our own table (I like that), but we were the only ones so the place looked a bit desolated. It seems to be busy in the evenings though. The menu has great local cuisine choices so I was really looking forward to our meal! We enjoyed the bobotie spring rolls with prune chutney very much as a starter. The tuna carpaccio was also nice but we could only eat it after 10 minutes because half of it was still frozen… On to the main courses. The steaks were good (sirloin and kudu), but they were cooked too long so my rare steak was more medium rare. But still enjoyable, so no need to bother the kitchen with this. The chimichurri sauce that accompanied the steak was way to sour for the meat. It didn’t match at all, so I used it for the side salad instead (that I fortunately could order instead of the potatoes, I like that as well). The sriracha mayo that my partner choose for his sirloin was good. We shared the campari orange almond tart which was small and a bit bland. It didn’t justify the quite steep price of 78R at all. All and all a nice meal, but with a bottle of Diemersdal Pinotage (268R compared to 99R at Woolies) 1128 Rand was a bit too much in my opinion. I think I can get a better meal for this amount of money somewhere else in the Western Cape. Maybe better to try in the evening and choose our courses...

The venue is lovely, cozy atmosphere and some African art on the walls. The service was excellent our waiter was attentive and so was the host for the evening. We ordered: beetroot and goats cheese salad and tuna carpaccio for starters, both dishes were fresh and well prepared. We ordered: beef fillet steak for main with a side of veggies. The steak was cooked as requested, but extremely dry, we were disappointed and recommend ordering a sauce with this dish. Generally we don't have sauces with our steaks but this requires it. The side veggies were lovely and we enjoyed the zest of lemon for flavor. Our final course was dessert: a bit of a hit and miss with this. The baked cheesecake with passion fruit was amazing, fresh and decent portion size. The apple pie however was a complete miss, large chunky apple slices undercooked with a crumb and cream, this was unappetizing and truly disappointing. They have a good selection of wines to choose from and MCC by the glass which we appreciated. Overall a 3/5 on the food but all...

My recent visit to Nguni Restaurant in Plettenberg Bay left me thoroughly disappointed, particularly with the steak dish. The steak was unfortunately charred/burnt, resulting in an unpleasant, bitter. The steak was also incredibly dry and bland, to the point where it was virtually inedible without sauce. The sauces offered were not typical accompaniments for steak for example a spicey mayo sauce. To add insult to injury, the restaurant charges addition for a sauce and additional for vegetables. This brought the total cost of the steak meal very epensive and a price that is clearly aimed at tourists and completely unjustified given the poor preparation of the food. In summary, the steak at Nguni was a far cry from what one would expect at this price point. The burnt taste, dryness, and the need for an overpriced sauce made for a truly terrible meal. I cannot recommend ordering the steak and feel that the overall experience was a significant letdown and a...

I really like the concept of this restaurant, Nguni meat, modern African interior and music, but the food just wasn't that exciting for me, especially after reading the other reviews. The staff was great, service was excellent, although being asked by 3 people if we are enjoying the food straight after each other, is a bit much. We shared a boboti springroll starter which was nice but the spices could have been stronger. The steak was really tasty, although pink when ordering well done. My cold meats platter was edible but nothing exciting, had a similar platter 2days ago at Donegal wines and it was riveting, but the tastes here was flat, the best on the plate was the cumin flavoured beetroot! The cuppacino wasn't great, good coffee is a must. This place has amazing potential, but sadly the best of our dinner was the staff.

Nguni Restaurant in Plettenberg Bay is a delightful culinary spot, with a unique approach to South African cuisine. Nestled in a charming, artfully decorated setting, the restaurant offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Nguni's menu is a tribute to local flavors, focusing on traditions. The presentation of food is simple and no-nonsense, complementing the overall rustic yet local vibe of the place. For dessert I strongly recommend the typical South African dessert, with Amarula, absolutely fantastic! Service is warm and attentive, adding a personal touch to the dining experience. Pricing is very reasonable, high value for money. For those looking to savor the essence of South African culinary traditions in a relaxed and home-like environment, Nguni is a top choice in Plettenberg Bay.
