Our visit to the Mexican taco and taqueria in Greenpoint was nothing short of extraordinary!

We indulged in a variety of menu dishes, including the Corn & Smoked Jalapeno Croquettes (smooth consistency and crispy shell), the Crispy Duck taco (shredded duck was flavourful), and the inventive Broccoli & Pickled Ginger vegan taco (absolutely shocking, this is the most refreshing dish). Each dish surpassed expectations with its burst of flavours and impeccable execution. The Steak quesadilla (cooked to perfection) and Chicken enchiladas (notes of tomato came through) were equally delightful, leaving us craving for more.

A highlight of our experience was meeting the taqueria owner, who graciously treated us to a fascinating lesson on different types of tequila. Despite not being a tequila enthusiast, we were pleasantly surprised by the worm tequila, which offered a unique and unexpectedly delicious twist.

The service, from the friendly waitstaff to the attentive "bouncer" outside, was impeccable, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable dining experience. The vibrant atmosphere, adorned with pink walls and captivating La Muerte art pieces, immersed us in the spirit of Mexico. It's no wonder this taqueria is a beloved hotspot among locals.

Overall, our visit was a culinary adventure filled with exquisite flavours, warm hospitality, and unforgettable ambiance. We can't wait to return for another round of...

This is a 5 star management review. It was a stormy humid day in die Kaap which is rare for Cape Town in the middle of December. Suddenly I felt like jackfruit tacos. El burro was down on Uber eats and I didn’t know what to do. I decided to call the establishment directly. Uber was restarted on their side and I was told to put down and try again. After doing exactly that I was now able to see el burro on Uber eats but none of the delicious items were available ( especially my jackfruit tacos)

I called back and the manager herself was experiencing the same problem when trying to order from her phone. After 2-3 minutes on the phone I was assured it would work this time but was told again to call if there were any problems. I tried again …. It didn’t work :/

I thought twice about calling a third time but my inner desire for those tacos was simply …. Too strong.

The manager on duty said I should give my order and that she would Uber package it over. There were no Uber drivers to deliver the goods. But then one of my waiters told me my food had arrived. I went downstairs and there she was ! Jenilee you are definitely manager of the month. You made my day. El burro is lucky to have you...

It's good - nice to see horchata on the menu - *edited to remove my thought that it was powdered, based on response from owner, thanks! The salsa that came with the guac, chips and salsa starter is most definitely not in any way authentic, but the guac was good. One of us had the steak quesadillas - more like tacos, they were good. One had the chicken enchiladas ... more akin almost to a chicken parm taste, which was surprising, but also good. The winner at the table was actually the vegan jackfruit enchiladas (although we did put real sour cream on them because the vegan sour cream that came with was kind of bland).

Nice ambience, great music, good service. If you're not expecting actual Mexican food (or really, more accurately, TexMex food), it's fine. The drink menu looks fun!

That said, we thought it was overpriced, so just three stars.

Note: This restaurant is upstairs. If there is an elevator, I didn't see it, so not sure how accessible it is for everyone. *As noted by owner, it is an old building, hence no elevator. My comment was not intended as a negative, just as a helpful bit of information for people planning...

We stopped by El Burro on a Monday night and expected it to be quiet and chilled - which we don't mind. But to our surprise it was bustling and busy, but the service still remained top-tier and the atmosphere was lovely. We had multiple waitresses check up on us, as well as a lovely lady who seemed to be the manager/owner. We felt really looked after and had a cozy spot out on the terrace to people-watch while we had our dinner. We ordered the fish, chicken and al pastor (pork) tacos which were all delicious. My husband loves spice but I like it more mild and we both thoroughly enjoyed these, packed with flavour and a great kick. The meat all round was seasoned perfectly and paired with the best and freshest toppings, with the pineapple salsa on the al pastor taco being a particular highlight. We then also opted for the taquitos and jalapeno croquettes which were excellent. I also tried a new cocktail they had introduced - an aperol margarita, which was the perfect start to our evening. Thank you El Burro, we will definitely be back!
