Gateway Curries — Restaurant in KwaZulu-Natal

It's was just after 2pm when we arrived at Gateway Curries. The place was quite. I stood at the counter for a few minutes, while the two behind the till had a discussion about how many samosas are available. With no greeting I was asked to place my order with I did and promptly paid for. My wife and I went to the washroom and returned to take our seats and wait. It was a good few minutes before my mutton bunny arrived. And the guys apologize for the bunny was left uncovered on a emply table while we were in the washroom. Needless to say it was not hot when we received it. It looked good with lots of gravy and I dug in. It was tasty or I was hungry! To start with the meat was tender but as I got to the bottom the meat was very firm, as if there were two different grades of meat. The patatoe was firm definitely not UTD as claimed in other review. The gravy although plentiful was disappointing and lacked the punch. Would I eat here again, not for a long time. Oh and there were plenty of flies around the table....

ordered biryani last week Friday which wasn't up to par @ R75 a portion. Portions were relatively small and each portion had max 4 small pieces of meat and lacked flavor. Called in and spoke to whom I presume to be a managed and discussed my apprehensions from which they informed me that it was the last bits left over and agreed to reimburse me with 2 bunnies on monday which I agreed to. Called in today to enquire on collection of the bunnies and they said they cant honor the agreement as they spoke to the kitchen staff who stated there was enough meat in the biryani. Sadly I wont be visiting this...

I used to visit this place a lot when I worked in the area. I've relocated and it's been more than 10 years since I have - but when I do make an occasional visit - the food is just as good as it was then. Food is always freshly prepared, tastes good and the portions are more than enough. What amazed me is that when I moved away in 2008, and I visited them maye a few times after that, and one day I met one of the workers at a hospital and they saw me and said, "quarter sugar beans, stoney and chillies pickle" - that in itself left me speechless - they gave me back my order after 4 years. Great place...
