….We final-lii got to come to this Swank-ii well talked about “Hot-Spot SKYE Roof-Top Restaurant & Cocktail Bar” located on the 7th floor of THE HYDE HOTEL, Sea-Point. We purchased a super deal voucher from “HYPERLI” for a 3-Course Gourmet Dining Experience for only R450.00 with a value of R760.00. What we also found to be nice about this venue is the fact that when and if available you can get free secure parking in the basement of the hotel. The welcome we received when we arrived here was awesome as it appeared that all the staff were over-lii friend-lii and showed that they wanted you to be here so that they can spoil and pamper you. The venue is tight, smallish but with an incredible atmosphere and ambience they even have a cos-ii log burning fire-place for colder days. Adding to the snazziness is the fact that you have a 180 deg view of Signal-Hill and the Atlantic-Ocean, so breathtaking and picturesque. Marshall cordial-lii welcomed us and showed us to our reserved table and handed us over to Rodrick who cared & served us well during our visit. The Bar is very impressive and colourful loaded with all the different bottles of hot-stuff of which all the love-lii artful cocktails are made up of. You will need loads of time to be able savour all the fan-cii looking and sure-lii very tasteful short, tall and super-charged cocktails. We started of with a Mojito and a Skye-Blaze both drinks were potent & flavourful. They have a nice wooden-covered multi-paged Menu with loads of various dishes on offer. For the 3- Course Voucher-Meal they have a separate menu-card which offer 4 x Starters, 8 x Mains and 4 x Desserts to choose from. Our Starters were: - 1. Celestial - Pops (Jalapeno, 2 cheeses & mashed potato-croquette covered in Panko crumbs pan-fried and served with spicy cream-cheese) 2. Fast & Fieryous Chicken-Livers (Tender chicken-livers cook in a cream-ii peri-peri sauce and served with fresh focaccia fingers) Both starters was scrumptious and insidious-lii delicious, it could’ve sufficed as a main-meal. Mains: - 1. Classic Fillet (Perfect-lii cooked 200g Fillet medallion, topped with a cream-ii green peppercorn sauce & served with rustic fries) 2. BBQ & Orange Pork Rib-lets (BBQ marinated and oven roasted Pork rib-lets served with rustic fries & buttered parmesan-sweetcorn) Again our meats where prepared superb-lii and one could taste that 1st grade meats & ingredients were used. For Desserts we had: - 1. Lemon & Berry Affair (Lemon Posset with Berry Compote) 2. Chocolate Indulgence (Chocolate Ganache-tart with Hazelnut Praline & salted Caramel Sauce served with homemade ice cream) All we can say is Absolute-lii decadent and the right way to end the evening off with. This venue warrants more of our visits in the future and yes we will be back. NB! One can true-lii appreciate the views and surroundings if one visits in the day time as came on a rainy day and almost night-time and yet what we saw and experienced was splendid. The have Free Guest WiFi all you have to do is ask for the code. The Toilets are “Unisex” and very neat and clean. The restaurant has daily specials like Mondays Burgers, Buy one & Get one etc, etc, even the Pub has a “Happy-Hour” daily from 17:00 to 19:00. We high-lii recommend this...
Read moreWe had a lovely meal at the restaurant downstairs a few months ago, and have enjoyed many a glass of wine on the rooftop, so when my wife said she'd gotten us a 3 course dinner in the restaurant I was quite looking forward to it. Oh my, what a dismal experience. From the moment we walked in the service was terrible. Shame, Wellington was a lovely chap, but his watering skills are nonexistent. The table was disgusting... Covered in some sticky substance and it took forever to get it cleaned and then to get the menus too. Our first choice of wine was sold out, so we opted for another. The starter, which turned out to be a shared starter consisted of 6 little prawns swimming in a pool of completely flavourless oil. Allegedly there to dunk out toast into. Only one side of the bread was toasted, the other side was a soggy mess. We had to ask for cutlery and napkins. Manageress, Tamara obliged. OK, strike 1 Onto the mains...Beef short rib and the dish which traumatised us so badly.... a seafood pasta. First, the beef. We were warned that it was fatty. I don't have a problem with fat, but the ribs were hardly cooked, so the fat hadn't had a chance to soften and render down. They also lacked any flavour. The chips tasted as if they'd originally been fried about 3 weeks ago and then dunked into old oil to heat up. Yuck. The pasta was even worse. No sauce whatsoever, so there was just a very large blob of stodgy pasta on the plate. Chef seems to have snapped it up into small pieces vwfore boiling it too... The seafood was overcooked and dry... and empty mussel shells arranged around the plate. We did search in amongst the pasta for them and found a few.. Pity... When we chatted to Tamara about it, she offered to make us another at no charge to take home... No, we both screamed.....strike 2 The desserts weren't very special either. The creme brulee custard was OK, but had a layer of rock hard sugar so thick that I literally had to snap it against the table. The Basque cheesecake was more baked than Basque and most forgettable. Strike 3 Come on Bruce Jack. You make a decent tipple, but to have your name anywhere near this food just does NOT...
Read moreI booked a table for my partner's birthday, but unfortunately, the experience was far from enjoyable.
Upon arrival, we were left waiting outside for nearly 30 minutes before we could finally catch the attention of our waiter—who appeared to be managing all the tables by himself. This was frustrating, especially since I had made a reservation for a special occasion.
Service remained slow throughout the night. One of the waitresses had a very unwelcoming demeanor, and it’s disappointing when staff don’t make an effort to be polite or professional.
As for the food, the starters were underwhelming. The pili pili prawns lacked flavor and were far from what I expected. The mains were even more disappointing. The seafood pasta was dry, and the fish tasted like it had been over-fried in old oil. The peri-peri chicken, though a decent portion, had a sauce that was nowhere near authentic, and there was an unappetizing amount hair and skin on the chicken, very unappetizing. The only positive here was that the chicken itself was tender.
The cocktails were also a letdown. For the prices, I expected much better quality. Unfortunately, they were watered down and didn’t compare to what you’d get at other restaurants at similar price points.
We opted to take the cheesecake to go, as we just wanted to leave after such a frustrating dining experience. On top of everything, the live singer was unnecessarily loud, which made it hard to enjoy any aspect of the evening.
The view was the only real positive, but when you’re paying such high prices, you expect more than subpar food and drinks. As a chef myself, I know what it takes to run a business and deliver quality food, and this was definitely not it. I truly expected more. This meal was valued at R955 and I used a wiki voucher that costed R500, but definitely not anywhere close in terms of standards.
All in all, it was definitely not worth the money. I won’t...
