Welcome to De Warenmarkt, a unique retro experience with a good selection of eats. This little gem of Stellenbosch allows customers to select their meat from Ryan Boon speciality meats' display and have the chef prepare it to perfection. Customers can interact with Ryan or one of his experienced butchers to discuss and purchase some of the best meat available in the region. Displays of beautifully aged steaks and other cuts allow people to ask questions and find out more about what it means to eat quality, sustainably sourced meat. Although the meals are prepared and displayed with cullinary flair, the portion sizes are similar to a great home cooked meal. Good service compliments the soft lighting to create a movie like ambiance which few other places in Stellenbosch can pull off. Our meals weren't cheap but the quality made it a definite value for money spend. It's no wonder De Warenmarkt has become the only restaurant in Stellenbosch that we frequently visit. We often order our meals for takeaway and are on our way in 15minutes to enjoy them at work for a late night.

It was my first visit, and I will definitely return! This restaurant is kind of like two restaurants in one. Beautifully decorated. The one side is a more romantic and quieter set up, and the other side a more vibey section, which they call the market. We sat on the quieter side (perfect for date night). We tried the Flat Iron Steak which was done perfectly. The Chunky Fries that came with the steak is the best fries I have ever had - Yum! For the steak section on the menu, you can ask your waiter to bring you a board with all the packaged steaks on it, to help you decide which one to order. They also sell their steaks and other products by the market section of the restaurant. For dessert, we ordered the Chocolate Ganache Tart and OMG, the peanut butter ice cream that comes with it, is so amazing. I did not see whether they sell the ice cream as well, but if they do I would definitely buy it! I am keen to try the starters (sharing platters) next time, as they all sounded so delicious. A restaurant well worth recommending.

We left a bit underwhelmed this time. We visited for an informal birthday lunch because they were open on a Monday. The starters were ok: lamb samoosas had a tasty filling but a bit oily. The seared springbok was tasteful but they serve you just 2 small slices of meat on old toast for R125. Unacceptable to charge that (also compared to the prices of the main courses). The mains were big portions, but the taste was average. The fish&chips was crispy but the fish wasn’t seasoned so zero taste. The tartare sauce was some kind of mayonaise. And the extra calamari (for R80!) tasted like old leftovers from earlier that day. The fish of the day was silverfish (a bit boring as well) in a supposedly bouillabaisse sauce, but rather some store-bought-ratatouille or whatever I can make of it. So all and all a mediocre lunch for a price that buys you much better quality in the area. I’m probably spoiled, but Stellenbosch just has so many great restaurants in this price range. This one won’t be on my favorite-list unfortunately.

This place is usually my favourite place, but on Tuesday night it completely disappointed me... Went for drinks because it was my friend's birthday. We are both very chilled people so I usually don't mind waiters making mistakes or service being slow, but if that is in combination with rudeness I will not stay silent.

We went at 19:30, stood by the door for 5 minutes and no one came to us. We eventually flagged down a waiter and asked if we can be seated, and he said we can sit at the long table, as it was quite full. We sat and started to chat, but after 15 minutes realised we still have not been brought menu's. The waiters were also not even looking in our direction so I had to walk to one and ask him for menu's. He didn't say sorry: he didn't even say anything at all. He just walked off and brought us menu's without a word. Extremely rude! We decided on our order and started conversation again, and after ANOTHER 15 minutes again realised no one came to take our order! This is 30 minutes now that we have not received ANY service!!!!! We decided we've had enough so we stood up to go to another restaurant, and at that moment the barista came and asked what was the matter. We told him we have been sitting here and no one is minding us, so a waitress ended up taking our orders and bringing it. Another hour passed, no one came to check in on us even though we wanted to order something to eat. Nothing.

EXTREMELY bad service! Wish I could...

I used to be a big fan of De Warenmarkt, a popular restaurant known for its delicious food and great service. However, my recent experience at the restaurant was disappointing. The food was mediocre at best, and the waiting times were incredibly long.

It's a shame to see the quality of the food decline at De Warenmarkt. The menu used to feature a wide variety of fresh, flavorful dishes that were expertly prepared by the talented kitchen staff. However, on my most recent visit, the food was bland and lacked the same attention to detail that I had come to expect from this establishment. It was clear that the restaurant had cut corners on ingredients and preparation, resulting in a disappointing meal.

Furthermore, the waiting times were unacceptable. It took far too long for our food to arrive, and the staff seemed uninterested in providing any updates or explanations for the delay. The restaurant was also quite crowded, which made for a noisy and uncomfortable dining experience.

Overall, I'm sad to say that I cannot recommend De Warenmarkt in its current state. While it may have been a great restaurant in the past, the decline in food quality and service is a major disappointment. Until the restaurant can improve its offerings and waiting times, I would recommend looking elsewhere for a satisfying...

We had dinner at De Warenmarkt. We were six people of which four of us opted for the butcher’s cut. Two of us got the right cut of meat that we selected from the butchery, however the other two did not receive theirs. The waiter assured us that was the meat that we selected. One was supposed to be a sirloin, it was not a sirloin. The other waiter come and assured us again, that is sirloin. The guest was a cattle farmer and a butcher, so he might know something about meat. Later we spoke to the manager, who just smiled and walked away. Inexperienced. A guest at another table said he also got another cut, other than the one he chose. You pay an extra R70 for the meat to be prepared only in salt, pepper and olive oil. However it tasted as if there was nothing on it. No taste, no flavour. Tasteless meat. The meat is served along with a tasteless mushroom sauce(mushrooms and cream/milk). I am under the impression the kitchen does not have ANY SALT! In my opinion, restaurants in Stellenbosch is so use to tourists and when the locals come along, the treat them the same – AS IF THEY KNOW NOTHING. I am a regular at De Warenmarkt and last night I took special guests to spoil them. It was a disappointment.

The restaurant is still a stunning restaurant and a gem in...
