Today, for the first time in many years, I had the opportunity to enjoy a breakfast, all on my own, at one of the many excellent street-side cafes in my home town, Stellenbosch. As I perused the lovely Mugg n Bean Menu, I was overcome with nostalgia as I decided on the Eggs Benedict. I vividly recalled a chat session with our son, Dugald (Duke) about the merits of this popular food item, especially about the difficulty of getting the consistency of the sauce exactly right... A challenge for even the top chefs of France. Yes...the things Duke and I conversed about had long gone beyond the "legs on the court" or the "wheels on the road"!!! Duke was só passionate about food and related topics... His ultimate dream, a restaurant of his own. With his sister and her husband the dream began to take shape when they opened a Coffee shop and Eatery on 1 October 2016...sadly, six weeks after the launch, Dugald died tragically while taking part in a cross-country run... As February is his birthday month, sitting down and enjoying his favourite Eggs Benedict, I recalled that conversation... Let me end by saying.. Duke would have been happy with the Mug n Bean Eggs Benedict.. That Hollandaise Sauce was just right.. And the service... Excellent. Special thanks to staff members Michael and Mandy Lee for...

My first experience here, they got my order wrong at the same time as getting the orders of two people at another table wrong. They were very quiet and yet it took 10 minutes just for a waitress to come to me and ask if I would like something to drink. Food came cold, and was not prepared as requested. I didn’t eat and just paid and left.
Yesterday I tried to give them a second chance (about a month after my previous bad experience). I sat down and was not served. After 10 minutes I decided to eat elsewhere so stood up and went to the counter to order a serious chai latte, my standard take-away beverage at all the other M&B’s. They charged me for a Serious, then only gave me a large. When I complained the waitress told me that they have been instructed to only serve the serious chai lattes in the smaller cups, with only half the chai powder and milk required. I am a regular at M&B and have never had this before. I am sitting at the Cape Town airport having a serious chai from M&B as I type this, and love it.
The Stellenbosch branch is a disappointment and should rather rename its franchise as not to bring the group’s reputation...

I'm always welcomed with a smile, from waiters to managers to the barista, and my usual extra hot latté arrives at my table before I've even asked and my Mac is even plugged in! On those extra early mornings I catch the tail end of a last sweep of the floor or a table and the whiff of detergent, testimony to good housekeeping and pride in their establishment – and this includes the bathroom. The service is warm and friendly, yet professional. I appreciate their attention to detail and how observant they are taking care of their customers – they know just when to quietly make a next cup of the famous bottomless coffee magically appear on the corner of my table, extra hot and with hot milk, just as I like it. I sincerely commend Mugg & Bean Stellenbosch for excellent customer service and great coffee. Next I'm going to try the M&B App which the on-the-ball staff have recommended. Keep at it, M&B Stellenbosch, you're...
