I hope to return to this fascinating establishment soon for a full meal. In the meanwhile I’ll write about what I experienced. Most importantly, I was delighted to have the opportunity to try yet another country’s cuisine for the first time. Who would have expected to do so here in Seoul?! More like London, I would have thought, for Uzbek/Kazakh cuisine. Actually, I only tried the pastries and coffee. Both were good, a Kazakh version of baklava, rustic and simple but tasty nonetheless, and a sort of walnut-raisin Neapolitan. The service seemed rude at first, until I realized that the young man at the front really didn’t speak either much English or much Korean. But then a young woman came out of the kitchen. Turns out she speaks rather good English but very little Korean. Even though she is Korean by genetic heritage she’s only been in Korea a month, is Uzbek by upbringing and citizenship but speaks Russian as her first language. Forget the food (much of which looks rustic but enticing), this place is a cultural melting pot all wrapped up in one little neighborhood establishment....
Read moreThere are so many Russian restaurants in Dongdaemun district of Seoul - hard to choose the right one! What really makes this place stand out, is that their chef Misha is a Korean Culinary Arts Academy graduate. Not every Russian Korean chef can brag about it! Also, while the food (primarily Uzbek and Russian cuisine) is very delicious - prices won't disappoint either! Unlike some pricey/touristy Russian eateries in the Itaewon area. We've ordered the real "staples" from the menu: "coated herring", pickled mushrooms, farm-style roasted potatoes and salmon/beef "shashlyk" (shish kabob). Each dish was perfectly prepared and served on the snow white elegant plates. We highly HIGHLY RECOMMEND this restaurant to anyone!
