I Love ShinDangDong — Restaurant in Seoul

Located at the Tteokbokki Street, this is one of the biggest shops and another competing one right opposite to eat. I didn't know which to choose but just randomly picked this. I have to say this place serves the best tteokbokki I have eaten in my life so far! I didn't know what to expect but when I walked in it looks so traditional and old school just a very big place and then they are playing kpop singers concert like it was a very happening place. Menu was relatively easy, you pick one of the flavours you one and then you decide if you want any add ons or sides. I just went with the one listed "best", they showed me a Korean menu but later after I finished ordering they showed me an English one. The original size was actually for minimum 2 persons but there was one lady who told me she would prepare a smaller portion for me and half the price, which was very nice of her. She was busy preparing food for others but she kept a lookout for me and used some simple English to help me and also teach me on the steps. It's been four years from the last time I made a visit here and the wait proved worth it. I love the balance of their sauce, it has great flavor, not just mounds of pepper paste. The staff is very helpful and attentive, and the price is well within reason for what you get. We hit this up for lunch and the crowd was manageable, at dinner time it can be a different story. "달지 않아 맛있었다"

신당동은 즉석떡볶이 타운이라는 것을 모르는 분들이 없다. 골목에 들어서면 여러 가게에서 호객행위를 하신다. 처음 가보신 분들이라면 당연히 어디를 갈지 고민하시게 되고 확고한 본인의 취향이 있다면 본인의 가게로 직행하시겠다.

본인도 처음에는 그냥 다 같은 즉떡집들인줄 알았는데 여러 번 여기 저기 방문하고 나니 각 가게마다 특징이 있고 맛도 다르며 사이드메뉴들도 다르다. 해물토핑이 있는 곳도 있고(우리집 떡볶이, 아이러브신당동 등), 닭발이 있는 곳도 있다(마복림할머니네 계열 빼고 대부분).

줄이 가장 긴 곳은 역시 마복림할머니집. 그러나 가장 넓고 손님이 많은 곳은 그 건너편의 이다.

이곳은 포장해서 먹은 기억은 있는데 마복림할머니집 보다 좀 더 진한 맛이였던 걸로 기억한다. 이번엔 매장에서 경험을 해봤다.

아이러브신당동은 매장도 넓지만 신당동의 모든 메뉴들을 다 모아놓은 듯한 신당동 종합세트의 느낌이다. 떡볶이 정류도 기본적인 신당동떡볶이에 치즈떡볶이, 해물떡볶이, 눈물떡볶이, 아이러브 떡볶이, 짜장떡볶이가 있고 사이드로는 김밥, 순대. 닭발이 주문 가능하다.

기본에 오뎅사리로 주문을 했는데 제법 양이 푸짐하다. 적당히 끓여졌을 때 맛이 마복림집과는 사뭇 다르다. 마복림할머니집의 맛이 끓이면서 맛이 드는 타입이고 그러면서 단맛이 증가하는 스타일인데 여기는 처음부터 간이 맞는 진한 맛이다. 끓여가면서 맛이 들긴 하지만 단맛이 배가되지는 않는다. 물엿이나 설탕이 많이 들어가지는 않는다는 뜻. 오뎅도 마복림할머니집은 아주 얇은 오뎅을 쓰는 반면 여기는 조금 도톰한 오뎅을 쓴다. 마복림집과의 맛의 차이를 알았으니 이제는 기분에 따라 결정이 가능하게 됐다 ㅎㅎ

순대가 찰지고 맛있는데 희한하게 후추맛이 난다.
