Our story & why They deserve 1/5: we got a table and were surprised by the view. Some restaurants have open kitchens, some have bars, some have meat gallery. Char served us a view of staff doing dishes. So for 2 hours you can see and hear person doing dishes. In my opinion this is not acceptable.
nightmare begins we ordered appetizer, sides, bottle of wine and 2 steaks: lady tenderloin and strip loin. Once steaks were served, we cut them to check them out. lady tenderloin was order as medium. It came as rare / medium-rare. This should not happen at proper steakhouse, but I understand that sometimes it can occur. We asked waiter to check it and change it. There was no “sorry” or “apologize”, but he acknowledged and took it. now… after 5-7 minutes steak came back. It was… the same steak!!!(we could see as it was cut through)! They burnt it with something strong and returned it. There was charcoal everywhere. Absolutely unhealthy and disgusting. Furthermore it was now medium well. Photos of this attached(quality is not great due to dimmed light, apologies for that). This is definitely not acceptable in a proper restaurant. Every other steakhouse if this happen - you get a fresh new steak and immediate apology. after that the staff pretended we did not exist. For 20 minutes no one came, no sorry, no apologies, nothing. Once they took platters with burnt chunks of tenderloin - there was absolutely no question “how was it?”. Horrible service! Definitely something you would wish for your loved one / Lady taking the Lady steak. after 20 minutes Head Waiter / Manager came by and asked if we want to order desert. We declined and explained our story. He apologized, checked with staff and offered free cheesecake. We declined, this was yet again very unprofessional - I would expect we should not pay for the steak. Plus apology should come much earlier. It’s not about the money, but about principles. in the end we paid 139€ for the meal. It is on the pricey end of spectrum for Tenerife and I would expect much better experience. Be also aware prices in the menu do not include tax - quite surprising for Europe as this is rather US typical practice.
To sum up: absolutely horrifying story showing extremely unprofessional stuff (both the cook and waiter). The Head Waiter/Manager tried to fix it, but also failed. it’s not a proper premium steakhouse experience, food is mediocre and view from table is low class. You would expect much better for this kind of money and I’m sincerely disappointed.
Manager apologized and promised that “next time it will be much better”. Oh Dear, there will be...
Read moreWe visited on Saturday evening, our first night in Tenerife and were very excited to visit CHAR, being very big foodies from London.
Our welcome was fantastic, Manuel our waiter was fantastic, the sommelier was fantastic, everything about our starter (prawns) was fantastic. We were having a very lovely evening.
My wife is pregnant so we needed her steak completely well done. 2 waiters were very much on the same page and agreed to butterfly her fillet steak so it was completely cooked through.
The steaks arrived. My steak was fantastic. A superb cut of dry aged Galician meat on the bone, beautifully cooked and presented. My wife’s arrived, not butterflied and still pink. It was cooked medium-well done to start with. We sent it back. Apologies from the waiters, no problem at all. It came back 5 mins later, same piece not butterflied and still pink in areas. We sent it back and asked for a fresh piece.
It came 10 mins later, a new piece now butterflied, but cooked medium. Pretty pink this time. This time I got slightly annoyed. We are in a top class steak restaurant yet the head chef clearly had issues cooking a steak the whole way through. What baffled us more was that the whole kitchen is open and on display to customers and the head chef was arguing with the waiters in-front of us as if no error had been made. As if the steak was cooked through and we were all mad. It was still clearly pink. The steak came back, this time charred (which is fine), and 95% cooked through with one piece pink. My wife ate most of her steak and it was fine.
In any normal scenario my wife would eat a nice pink piece of meat, but it was a very clear agenda at the start of the meal, yet it couldn’t be executed by an experienced chef. It was a bit embarrassing how it was handled, and the attitude from the chef on show was unacceptable. I was very close to walking out and paying nothing for the meal had it not even for Manuel.
The chef tried to make up for it by sending out another thin steak about 10 mins later when we were finishing up. This was much nicer but far too late. My advice would be to own your mistakes and come over to our table to personally apologise for such a poor mistake (4 times). That obviously didn’t happen.
Manuel brought us a complimentary dessert which was greatly appreciated and my wife’s steak was also removed from the bill.
Not the end of the world, but sometimes you are defined by how you handle mistakes. This was handled abysmally, and on show to the customers of the restaurant. I am writing this review as hopefully it’s a learning experience for everyone.
Thanks for the rest of the staff that are clearly doing a great job and are passionate about their food/wine and restaurant as a whole. I would recommend visiting, but we wouldn’t...
Read moreIt’s been a week since we ate at Char. We want to say thank you very much to Federica one last time! She was our amazing host for the night. We came in at half past nine, but unfortunately there was no table available. The manager was very friendly and told us to come back in 45 minutes and so we did. We got a lovely table at the back window near the palm tree. The window was open and provided us with a nice cool breeze. It was the second or third week that they opened this location. Federica told us they moved the restaurant due to more space for guests and for the kitchen. They want to focus more on fine dining and that is exactly what we experienced tonight. This is no quick bite restaurant, it’s definitely not for children and it’s not cheap, but it’s an amazing and tasteful experience. We started off with some bread, olive oil, flaky sea salt and butter and we ordered the tartare and the garlic shrimps. Federica suggested to make them into courses and start with the tartare since it was cold. It was absolutely amazing in taste, texture and presentation. The garlic shrimps were amazing too. All of the servers were involved in our experience by asking multiple times if everything was okay and if we needed more bread or water. Before we moved on, we asked a sommelier about the wines. He explained it in a way we would understand and we made a choice that suited us. We went with the rioja as it is a Spanish wine with some body and tannins. As our main course we had the beef wagyu (A4) and the grilled wagyu skirt together with some potato slices with truffle and grilled vegetables. All of it was very delicious. The wagyu beef was very tender and very soft. The truffle added a nice earthy flavour to the potatoes and the vegetables had a nice smokey flavour. We had a very great evening here and when we’re back on Tenerife, we will definitely return here. We definitely recommend you to eat here if you have a special occasion or not, but take your time and enjoy the experience. Every once in a while you need to enjoy life and to not look...
