Abarrote — Restaurant in Alicante

Firstly this review is only based on the staff and reservation "stipulations" when trying to book a table.

Walking past we thought we would try this restaurant and enquired (in Spanish, we speak pretty good Spanish having lived here 19 years). Our request was for a table for 2 inside at 9pm so nothing unusual. The waiter decided he should speak to us in English despite us answering him in Spanish but ok that's fine. He then told us that we can only have a table at 8pm but we have to leave before 10pm or at 10pm. We queried this as we didnt want to eat at 10pm but could not promise we would be done by 10pm if we had the 8pm booking. His attitude to us was rude, totally indifferent and basically said take it or leave it so we left.

There are many many fine restaurants in Alicante and we try to find a new one one during each of our visits (3 or 4 times a month). While it's your perogative to stipulate seating times don't be surprised if your local customers give their business to your competitors. Customers which will be there during off seasons and who you will rely on when the tourists are not there.

Update after reply: While I appreciate your comments this does not answer the rude and uninterested way your staff spoke to us.

We are not strangers to to Alicante, we are in the city 3 days a week. And this is the first time we have come across this time restriction.

Pues a mi no me ha disgustado el sitio.

Fui ayer (día antes de San Juan), con un poco de miedo por las reseñas de aquí y de TripAdvisor, y encima un día gordo como la vispera de San Juan que estaba la zona a reventar. Osea que si algo salia mal iba a ser ayer.

Y a mi me ha parecido un buen sitio, recomendable.

Probe las croquetas de pollo y espinacas. La de pollo bien, la de espinacas estaba muy muy buena me sorprendió muchísimo la verdad. Probe también la empandilla que estaba bastante buena, me gusto. Las patatas bravas que estaban bien. El revuelto de huevos que tambien me gusto y el sándwich de pastrami que estaba muy bueno y además era una buena cantidad. Osea que en general bien el sitio.

De lo que si me voy a quejar es de el montadito de ensaladilla que tienen ellos con salmón, huevas y en un pan de corteza. El pan de tipo corteza no pega nada con la ensaladilla, pero nada. Y tengo que pagar un sobrecoste por llevar salmón y huevas que tampoco es que peguen mucho la verdad. Si fuera una ensaladilla diferente (rollo con ingredientes no habituales), con otro tipo de pan que sea un sucedaneo de una rosquilla por ejemplo y con otra cosa por encima vale, lo pago. Pero es que el pan de corteza no pega absolutamente nada, y el salmón poco y ya la hueva nada. Osea que pagas un sobrecoste por el salmón y la hueva. Que si fuera un bocado de la leche la combinación, bueno. Pero es que no tiene ningun tipo de sentido la mezcla, sobre todo el pan ese que por dios que lo cambien que no tiene ningun tipo de sentido.

Los precios medianamente correctos. La media ración de huevos revueltos quiza se iba un poco por la poca cantidad que había. Y bueno lo de la ensaladilla que he comentado antes. La gente se queja bastante de los precios pero no probe mucha cosa y no puedo opinar bien. De lo demás que probe si que los veo adecuados.

El servicio y ambiente bien. No probe muchas cosas pero me quedo con las ganas de volver y probar mas variedad, sobre todo los postres.

Make waiters are ‘too cool for school’. Intimidating and cold. From the moment we walked into the restaurant we were made feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Young staff members with ageist bad attitude. They couldn’t get us out of the place quick enough. We have been visiting Alicante for over 25 years and this is an experience that doesn’t reflect the true nature of the Alicante service and restaurants. Dreadful re-heated food, watered down drinks and bad attitude. If management are worth their salt they won’t respond to this with a defensive attitude.
