Clandestino — Restaurant in Bilbao

We went into this place at about 3PM for lunch based on reviews. Note that we are very well traveled in Spain and have ordered menu del día numerous times all over the country. We came in and they said we could not eat in the restaurant, only the bar. Fine. We had the menu del día in front of us. It clearly said $15.90 per person includes one drink. I went to order the three courses for myself and the server said something I didn’t understand (I do speak a little Spanish - albeit poorly). I thought she said the offer was EITHER a first plate or a second plus dessert. So I tried to then just order one second and so did my husband. She said we couldn’t do that. We then thought she meant that we both had to order the same dishes - one for the primero and one second plate. Not ideal because we like to order different things and share but whatever, fine. So I say “two of this starter and two of this second plate” and she says we can’t do that. Finally we figure out that she’s telling us we get ONLY get one starter and one entree to share between us. What? We have never had a menu del día work like this. Fine, we were tired and hungry. They brought the starter to me and the entree to my husband at the same time. Neither portion was particularly big and neither had very good taste at all. But hey they gave us two desserts. We spent $36 and I left hungry!!

At no point did the menu indicate that dishes were to share. I read enough Spanish to understand that. And I translated the menu just to be sure.

My wife and I had lunch here as part of an excursion, Fine Art and Fine Dining, with Norwegian Cruise Line. The servers treated us like we were unwelcome, and were very rude. In addition, three members of our group had "scooters," and the servers treated them like they were a nuisance. Further, they did not bring our drinks, they did not refill the water, and only asked a few of our group if they wanted coffee with desert. Lugar al que fuimos con una gran expectativas. Y he de reconocer que tanto el trato por los empleados de sala como el ambiente del local (tiene varios apartados) muy gratificante. Pero la parte principal en un restaurante que es la, comida. Nos dejo un poco insatisfechos. Carta corta y con gran protagonismo del producto y su ejecución como se espera en un local de este nivel de aproximadamente 50€ por persona. Nuestra propuesta. Ensaladilla, como un gran montaje de productos que estaba muy buena aunque creo que algúnos sabores quedan enmascarados con la potencia de otros. Tacos de Carrillera, excelente carne melosa y con gran sabor. Con una original torta. Atún Rojo, empezó nuestra decepción. Producto muy fibroso con difícil ejecución para poder comerlo de forma correcta y pese a ser una parte muy especial del atún. No fue algo que nos sorprendiera. Picanton, realizó con gran maestría con dos técnicas diferentes. La parte braseada muy buen sabor. Pero la parte frita no fue algo que nos sorprendiera. Si a esto le sumamos. Que al tener tanta cantidad de huesos(normal por el tipo de pieza que es) hace de la comida un poco complicada. No se como explicar, quizás fuera una mala elección por nuestra parte. Pero cuando voy a este tipo de establecimientos no voy en predisposición de tener que ponerme a despiezar los platos.
