Located at the edge of Fuengirola, right beside the Fuengirola river mouth, Chiringuito El Cateto offers a charming setting for a beachside meal. During our Sunday lunch visit, we were a group of four adults and two children and were fortunate to find a table inside without a reservation — a rare stroke of luck, as the place fills up quickly, especially on weekends. If you're planning to visit, especially for rice dishes like paella or arroz caldoso, I highly recommend booking in advance.
The food overall was quite enjoyable. A highlight was the espetos de sardinas (grilled sardines), which were beautifully done — fresh, smoky, and well-priced for the area. The service also stood out: the staff was quick, attentive, and very friendly, making the experience even more pleasant.
However, not everything was perfect. The patatas bravas were a bit of a letdown. Instead of the traditional spicy tomato-based sauce, they came alongside what tasted like salsa gaucha, which didn’t fit the classic brava profile and felt out of place.

Chicken and chips turned up for my boy which the chips were undercooked but he didn't want to complain while me my partner and 2 girls waited a further 20 mins for our food to arrive and bare in mind it wasn't busy and we specifically asked for it to all come out together. When the rest of the food arrived unfortunately only one paella arrived and got told the lady who took our ordered had gone home . Read moreWe had high hopes, but unfortuantly they were too high we had to wait 1.5 hours to be served with food (I'm serious with this number), then our 2 "freshly" GRILLED fishes that we ordered were soaking with oil - they did them fried eventually, just to discover that one of them is still not done inside (so they killed him a second time). then we reminded the waiter that we ordered a starter as well so he brought it up 5 minutes later.
Only the starter was good, the fish was poorly made. on the bright side is the service and the people... The team were actually nice but it didnt make it for our poor expirience in this place.
