We ordered: Sangria, bread, gazpacho, and seafood paella (“Paella de Marisco” on the menu).
The short review: Tourist trap restaurant with okay paella, pushy waitstaff, outdoor seating and tons of flies. Barely a 3/5. We recommend going elsewhere (not next door, it’s the same thing). If you’ve arrived here due to a “Top 10” Andalusian guidebook from Eyewitness Publishing, which advertises low prices & a daily menu, this is not the right place.
The long review:
If you’ve scrolled through the reviews for this restaurant and are trying to make sense of the back-and-forth between the bot-like 5-star reviews and vitriolic 1-star reviews, here’s the deal:
It’s a seedy Spanish-cuisine restaurant where everything but the other customers are hustling you. The waiter/waitress will hustle you to buy ‘more, more!’, the swarms of flies will hustle you for your food, and if you’re extra unlucky, a local performer will yell/sing in Spanish while performing with his guitar (imagine punching guitar strings) and afterwards hustle you for tips while you try to eat.
The waiter (that infamous “Moroccan” other reviews have mentioned) is quite pushy, loud, and annoying. Yes, he does exclaim “BEST PAELLA IN GRANADA” when bringing you the dish. Let’s be real here, the food can speak for itself, I don’t care what the waiter thinks - of course they’re going to say that it’s “the best”. The yelling is unnecessary.
The food is just okay. Honestly it’s edible, we didn’t get sick or anything, and the flavor is fine. I believe you can have better paella elsewhere. The gazpacho is simple and refreshing, but again not outstanding or reason for a return trip. The same can be said for the sangria. Our real gripe is the pricing of the paella. At a glance, the price on the menu may be confusing, but it’s like this:
PER PERSON the Paella is 14/17/16€ (veggie, seafood, meat and seafood, respectively).
Here’s the first catch: you must order for at least two people, so actually it’s 28, 34, or 32€ at a minimum.
Here’s the second catch: from what we could see on other guests’ tables (some of whom were 4-5 people), the portions do not scale much, if at all. Perhaps there is a little more rice or a few extra mussels, but not enough to be visibly different and certainly not enough to justify the price hike. So the bigger your party, the bigger the ripoff. The portion given is appropriate for about 2-3 adults. We do not believe it’s worth the 34€ cost.
All in all it was a memorable experience for the wrong reasons and with otherwise forgettable food. Maybe the waiter could yell instead, “Best Paella in Plaza Larga”, but just because its only competitor is an identical business...
Read moreUPDATE: Based on the reply, adjusted to one star. Rude and ignorant reply. We were quite nice considering how poor everything was. The menu said fried potatoes. No mention of egg anywhere. Understand this can be a lost in translation thing, but mentioning fried potatoes and no egg in the menu, but delivering the exact opposite is not good. So the mistake is the restaurant’s, not ours. Oh and I didn’t even mention the Sangria originally. I will now. My partner ordered one and it had zero fruit in it. Last time I checked, key part of the drink.
Also, we were two people. Our tour group was 20 odd (not everyone at this place), sure, but our table was two people. The tone and rudeness of the reply just sums of what type of establishment this is. I could be Asim from the Burj Khalifa (we didn’t display such attitude) or anyone else, the food here still would be terrible. Awful. Avoid.
ORIGINAL: The atmosphere of Plaza Larga was the best thing about this place, sadly. Bless the staff, they’re trying to do their best, but just didn’t go right. Took ages to get our drinks (think they forgot) and got the food order wrong. We ordered what the menu described as slow fried potatoes. What we got was a close to mashed potatoes with two fried eggs on top. To be fair to the staff, they didn’t charge us, so appreciated that. Elsewhere, the croquettes with actual fried potatoes were nice. However, the garlic chicken was like greasy/oily and more bone than chicken. Also, the chicken didn’t look appetising at all. An all round bad food experience. Gets two stars based on the surroundings and the fact that staff tried to be helpful. Would not...
