I was expecting the Church of St Nicholas to be a five minute visit but it was actually fantastic, one of the best churches I have been in. The interior was painted white but the roof opposite the tower was a sort of stained glass affair (probably not actually glass though!) that bathed the church in coloured light. The murals on the wall were wonderfully colourful too, one told the story of St Nicholas and the others were Ethiopian and Syriac/Maronite. We then climbed the stairs to the tower, these were modern concrete so the vertigo wasn't too bad and we were the only ones there luckily. The view from the top was just amazing, the panorama of the Alhambra spread out in front of us but with no house roofs intruding and blocking the vista. As an example, many will climb the steep hills of the Albaicin neighborhood to get to the Mirador of San Nicolas to enjoy views of the Alhambra, but they will not make the very small effort that it takes to visit the church right behind it. San Nicolas is worth the climb by itself. It has a unique feature that I haven't seen in any other church. The painted glass of its ceiling uses natural light to add color to whitewashed walls. It’s stunningly minimal and simple contrasting with many Cathedrals and Churches I saw here. The glass ceiling is unbelievably colourful and elegant.
