I'm not a prolific poster of reviews, preferring instead to reserve my contributions for exceptionally good or bad experiences. So this leaves me with a dilemma. Our meal tonight at The Hook Food Culture in Las Palmas was both exceptionally good and exceptionally bad. I am happy to recommend the food, which was tasty, fresh, innovative, and well presented, (we ordered the shrimp and chicken teriyaki, Italian burger with two desserts- see photos) but the service and atmosphere was poor. We were greeted by a male front of house server who was surly, borderng on indifference. The fact that we hadn't booked was a problem for him and we were left with the impression that he was doing us a massive favour by finding us a table. As you can see from the photos for most of the time we were there, the other nine indoor covers were empty. At no point did the server attempt to make eye contact with us or make any attempt to make us feel welcome (in stark contrast to other restaurants in the city and this street) The atmosphere was decidedly frosty, we were the only diners for a 20 minute period and we almost walked out before ordering. At no point did the server check in with us after taking our order. The QR code driven menu was bloated with "recommendations" and was poorly presented. Things improved when the food arrived. Our second server was much warmer, and she at least made eye contact with us and managed a smile. The food was excellent and is to be recommended. Staff seemed to be busy with takeaway orders during our visit, so perhaps this is ...
Read moreThis isn't my usual choice, more "where local eat" type but gave this a go due to good reviews and glad we did. "Fusion" is always a bit pretentious, but from the 3 dishes we shared, hard to criticise. Prawn salad with croutons is nice but nothing to write home about and all uphill from there. Kangaroo tenderloin (recommended by local who was in eating..thank you sir) was cooked to perfection. Medium rare, seared on outside, marinated in teriyaki, melted in mouth, that was a 10! The pork belly dish with avocado, rice, egg etc was also top marks. Pork tasted like it had been cooking for weeks, fell to bits, mixed well with other ingredients, a favourite of my wife's (Thai) tastes. Place was quiet, as we eat early, clean lines, well designed and full view of cooking area. Staff friendly, helpful, happy to explain dishes to us lazy "English only" speakers! Had all that, couple drinks each, under €50. I definitely recommend a visit.... P.S...locals definitely eat here so I'd book a table...

During my recent visit to The Hook in Las Palmas, I encountered a restaurant that offers a commendable dining experience. The service stood out for its friendliness, leaving a welcoming and warm impression. Despite the unpretentious exterior, the interior revealed a modern setting with an open kitchen.
Opting for the goat cheese salad as a starter, I found it to be fresh and tasty, though the dressing could use a slight improvement. Moving on to the main course, the black Angus was a highlight. The meat was excellently grilled, accompanied by flavorful potatoes and coleslaw, making the overall dish worthwhile in terms of both taste and price.
In summary, The Hook may not boast a fancy facade, but it delivers a solid dining experience in Las Palmas. With friendly service, a modern ambiance, and a kitchen that produces satisfying dishes, it's a recommended choice for those seeking a reliable meal...
