This was our first meal in Gran Canaria, and became the butt of all the jokes for the rest of the holiday - so it was good for that at least. To be fair to the place, I'll start by saying that most of the food we had was decent, and the host that sat us was a friendly guy. The rest of the service was bad enough that it's spurred me to write my first ever review.
Before we begin, I'd like to draw your attention to the following phrases:
Saharan squid - somewhat of an oxymoron, you might say, the desert not being known for its abundance of marine life. So when you see it on the menu, you remember it, the curiosity may even drive you to order it. Perhaps two of your party order it.
Jambos - nonsensical, a word never before uttered by Hibs fans ordering dinner. Apparently means "ginormous prawn".
Essentially, a mix-up was made, two people were served prawns instead of squid. Shouldn't be a big deal - except the head waiter came out, starting spouting nonsense about how we had obviously ordered the wrong jambo(?), and left the plates on the table. After asking multiple times, they took the untouched prawns (jambos?) away and said they'd be back with the squid.
At this point, we thought the head waiter was unpleasant, but the rest of the staff seemed apologetic and pleasant. We ordered some beers, which didn't arrive. Some time after the rest of us finished our meal, after starvation had kicked in, the squid finally arrived. For over 20 euros, you might expect more than 5 fried calamari rings.
When we asked for the bill and saw jambos on the receipt, my spirit dissociated from my body. Also on the receipt were the beers that never arrived. When we brought this to the attention of the 'nicer' waiter, he became enraged, and called us liars.
Anyway, it was a bizarre and unpleasant experience at the time, but after having visited multiple restaurants on the island since, it makes this place even more of a joke by comparison. Even writing the word Jambo has sent shivers of disgust rippling through my body.
Side note - if you want oil and balsamic vinegar, you'll have to squirt it out of deceptively powerful perfume bottles. Don't wear...
Read moreWent to this place with the wife and our good friend. Got quite an ok table outside. At first the service seemed good; they told us the specialties of the day which were red snapper and t-bone steak cooked on a paella pan for two with three different sauces. We took starters: one prawns (with garlic maybe), one provolone cheese with caramelized onions and one beef tartar with salt and pepper (as our friend has quite aggressive allergies). These were quite ok, nothing to complain about but the tartar could have been slightly smaller. Then the main course: me and my wife took the t-bone steak for two with three different sauces and asked that the meat would be medium. When the dish came, we got three Béarnaise sauces and a paella pan full of t-bone steak (cutted) that had been cooked as medium but it kept cooking on the pan and was very quickly well done... So it was partly chewy to eat :/ Our friend didn't have better luck either: she ordered some risotto. It came all white and was made with milk or cream as it had this slightly sweet taste that the canary island milk has. For me it would be ok, but our friend deemed it as inedible and pushed it on the side. We waited for some staff members to come to ask how are things and do we need more to drink and/or what is problem with the food, but nada. At some point we asked for a check/bill, got it and then said that we ain't paying for the risotto. Quite a heated debate after, it was removed. And me and my wife didn't have a chance to tell what went awry with our dinner... So all in all, wouldn't...
Read moreWe come every year to Gran Canaria and always make a point of dinning here. However, this year, we were very disappointed. We ordered our starters which came relatively quick, but then had to wait 40 minutes for our main, by which time the hunger had gone. I ordered the fish in salt and my husband ordered lamb shoulder but was told the last one had just been ordered, and would lamb medallions be ok. Of course, you can never guarantee that what you order is available. My fish, although nice, appeared not to have been filleted properly with many bones still within the dish. I later found out that the waiter who had filleted the fish at our table had only been with the restaurant for just under 2 weeks so maybe not as experienced as he should have been. Anyway, they said there was a problem with my fish, hence the time it took to arrive at the table, which must be why my husband's lamb was overcooked as it had most probably been left in a warm oven whilst my fish was cooking. It's such a shame this happened as it is a lovely place and although it was not a good experience on this occasion we will try again next year and hope for a...
