The worst restaurant I have ever visited – a horrible and awful experience
Last year I had the misfortune of visiting Modesto. This was previously one of my favourite restaurants 25 years ago, when a lovely and warm family ran it. It was always a highlight to eat here. Fast-forward to the modern day - it’s moved location along the same road and sadly been taken over by unpleasant and rude management. The Modesto name has been tarnished and it has nothing in common with the high standards from the past. Do not expect the real or original Modesto here.
My wife ordered the Canadian picaña and I went for the entrecôte. Both were truly awful and neither of us could come close to finishing our meals. The meat on both of our plates was tough and impossible to chew. I could only manage a few mouthfuls and informed the waitress about how terrible our meals were. She apologised and explained they have been having lots of complaints regarding the quality of their meat. I was shocked to hear this. The waitress admitted that their meat was poor and they had issues with their suppliers. She offered us the option to change our plates or accept a reduction for our meals.
My wife and I didn’t have confidence to eat anything else in the restaurant (the menu is limited and when the staff admit the meat is poor quality, why would you?), We decided to take the second option, so we could leave quicker.
The bill arrived and the nightmare experience of eating in the new and hugely inferior Modesto continued. The meals were not discounted. They were charged at their normal prices which cannot be considered reasonable or fair. It is an expensive restaurant, which is not reflected in the quality or service.
I explained what had happened to the manager. In a bizarre turn of events, he started shouting and pointing at other tables, telling us that other people were eating their meals. He was rude, arrogant and completely ignored the fact that his colleague had told us that our meals would not be charged at full price, due to the quality of the poor meat.
We both left feeling incredibly disappointed, hungry and worst all - cheated. I would never return here. Not even if I was paid to go back.
I’ve noticed a few other reviews have mentioned about the staff being rude and arrogant. This isn’t an isolated incident. The owner replies saying the feedback is invaluable and will help them to improve. This is clearly not happening. Be careful about stepping foot inside Modesto, unless you enjoy rude service accompanied with awful food. You can do so...
Read moreWhat an absolutely horrendous experience. We were excited to try this restaurant after my husband commented it used to be great years ago. He mentioned his parents suddenly stopped going, now we know why. We ordered the sirloin steak and the Canadian picanha, which were incredibly disappointing. Both were chewy and tough. My husband couldn't eat over half of his steak or the piece of the meat I shared with him. I could not cut the skewers easily. When we both raised a complaint with the waitress, she kindly apologised and affirmed they were having issues with their meat supplier; she said it's been happening often that they receive good cuts or sometimes hard ones, like ours. She offered to swap dishes, but we were not interested in anything else on the menu, as we were not taking chances with the meat anymore. The menu is very limited, which left us to choose between salads or starters, so we remained with our poor quality and highly expensive dishes. The waitress also mentioned if we decided to stay with our dishes, she would add a discount to the bill, due to the issues. However, that's not what happened. When the bill arrived, my husband asked to talk to the same waitress who helped us before. A man came, I'm not sure if he was the manager or the owner, he was the same man who took our order initially. He was arrogant and rude. He shouted out in front of all the other tables that we ATE the meat and that was the same meat everyone else was having it - and pointed around. I'm not gonna lie, people were having the sizzling ribeye steak (85 euros) and, yes, it looked lovely from where we were, but surely NOT the same meat. We had sirloin and Canadian picanha - not ribeye. He did not honour what his waitress said and implied we were not truthful with our complaint, contradicting completely what the other staff member had told us. (I actually feel sorry for mentioning this, since I might put the lady into trouble with the nasty manager). Yes, we have finished the VEGETABLES in our dishes, but not even near half of our meats. Let's face it, you don't order 62 euros of meat dishes to have vegetables! So, if you decide to give a try, you might be lucky enough to be served one of the GOOD cuts. But, it's a lottery. Let's just hope you won't need to complain about anything. If you care about customer service,...
Read moreStaying close-by and not wanting to get in the car for dinner we made our reservation for what we hoped would be some decent steaks.
The mushroom starter was a bit weird. It hadn't been seasoned properly and tasted of cheap/sweet alcohol. Tip...if you're using cheap or stale booze. Don't. Add a little garlic and finish with brown-butter and finely chopped Parsley (or Corriander) - white pepper and sea-salt.
The meat was good quality and certainly tasted beefy. That deep, slightly aged, flavour that you get with decent beef.
Trouble was, I'd ordered mine rare (I like it blue)...it indeed came rare but was cold (read "fridge-chilled") beyond the crust of the seared meat. So ensued a long conversation with the chef about bringing meat up to room temperature before cooking.
My wife's Sirloin was cooked well but the fat hadn't been given enough time to render during cooking. We were both disappointed.
I was told that it came with Potatoes and Vegetables....it came with one quarter of one potato and some undercooked red-cabbage and a red/green pepper "thing" which was luke-warm and almost raw.
If you can't cook vegetables properly, stick them in some vinegar (and/or lime juice) with a sprinkling of sea-salt and a touch of sugar and serve them pickled. That would've been preferable.
As I write this, I've realised that in hindsight, the cooking was pretty horrendous. Anyone with any appreciation of what constitutes skilled cookery - surely cannot consider this a decent restaurant. I'm dumbfounded.
I dislike visiting a restaurant which serves food that you could cook...
