The Bar Nadal (by that I mean the interior of the bar itself) is a narrow rabbit warren, squeezed between its neighbours the Sa Cova restaurant, and a tiny bakery. Its dark and slightly mysterious split level interior is cosy in the winter and cool in summer. The bar has a small terrace directly outside which is shared with Sa Cova and the Giovannis ice cream parlour, and is, when the sun shines, one of the sunniest and most charming corners of the Plaza de Sóller. Across the road, traversing the tram track, and right beside the public water fountain, the Nadal has another row of tables - excellent for lunch (see below).
Broadly speaking, the Bar Nadal, which is family run (and indeed, run with great enthusiasm, energy and charm) is an emblematic point of reference in terms of "eatin'n'drinkin" in Sóller. On Friday evenings, a multitude of (mostly local) people squeeze into the bar itself or the narrow space outside - for beer and to eat the very decent Pinxos. Visitors are always very welcome and tourists are amazed to find such a boisterous pub atmosphere in the town. On other nights, the Nadal attracts a lively crowd, and is very often the last bar open in Sóller. Buzzing and good humoured, it's definitely a 'must' for a decent cold beer in a lively environment.
However, if you seek a more peaceful and relaxing evening out, then head towards a table outside for a really good meal of simple local fare. The menu is quite extensive and reasonably priced, and all cooked to order, but the grilled fresh fish, meat, local dishes, pasta and salads are all excellent, as is the very decently priced house wine. If you sit by the fountain and have several beers, sooner or later you will need to make your way into the deep depths of the bar in order to seek out the loos, which are on the lower floor. But on the way, watch out for the tram! Back outside again, look out for the tiny niche containing a statue of Saint Sebastian being shot with arrows, which is squeezed high into the wall between the Bar Nadal and the bakery.
The Nadal is highly recommended - if you like fresh grilled fish with a plain salad, then go for the sole or Sea bass on the bone with a light drizzle of olive oil, parsley and garlic: it's the best in Sóller. The vegetable 'tumbet' is also very good - a Mediterranean dish comprising a layered oven baked "lasagne" of freshly baked vegetables (ie lots of aubergine, tomato, garlic and olive oil) and the freshly grilled veg pasta all'oli is also a great example of 'simple not mucked about' food. There are also family friendly menu options with nuggets and chips etc - and children love splashing around with the water from the drinking fountain (beware wet kids afterwards!) Tip: the locals eat and drink here, and it...
Read moreNot even one star is deserved. I am utterly disgusted by the behavior of the staff at this restaurant. We have been loyal customers for years, returning every summer to this exact place, but after this experience, we will never come back again. We were seated and waiting to be served when a fully tattooed lady with a terrible attitude cleaned the table next to us, looked directly at us, and then just walked away. She then stood by the door of the restaurant speaking to another staff member, completely ignoring us without a care in the world. When we politely asked if she was going to serve us, she responded with eye-rolling and a rude comment that her shift had just started, and she "didn't see us" because she "works inside." This is outrageous considering we were already seated before she even started her shift. Especially when she clearly saw us. When we expressed our frustration and asked how she could possibly not see us, instead of apologizing, she became even more aggressive. She started swearing around, using expressions like "dio," which was both shocking and disrespectful. And if the other guy was supposed to serve outside he failed very much too at his profession. We got angry after that too and left. As people who come from the gastronomy industry ourselves, we know what true hospitality is, and this behavior is absolutely unacceptable. If someone is too lazy to work or serve customers properly, they should just leave the job. This was one of the most unprofessional and idiotic displays of customer service we've ever encountered. We will be taking our business elsewhere from now on. This place has lost loyal customers due to one staff member's...
Read moreWe dined here today for lunch on the strength of the reviews. In retrospect I wish I’d read them in more details. We ordered the Mallorcan pasta, salmon salad and homemade hamburger. The pasta was tasty, plenty of sorbrada. The salmon salad was disappointing as it was smoked salmon and not a freshly cooked salmon fillet. There was a smattering of orange segments and some sliced tinned olives. It was okay. The hamburger was rare. I’m a meat lover but even I couldn’t have eaten it. The waitress took it back but rather than cook a fresh burger they brought back the original burger that had been cooked a little longer and so was still rare/medium rare. My 12 year old step daughter wouldn’t eat it as it wasn’t explained to her that it would be served rare/med rare and we were not asked about how we wanted it cooked. We refused to pay for the burger. A ‘lady’, senior waitress/manager then proceeded to educate us on how beef should be cooked. Explaining that it was beef and not pork and it was how it should have been served. She completely lost her cool when we suggested a new burger should have been cooked rather than the original one cooked for longer. Considering I am a butchers son and my partner has worked in hospitality for many years we didn’t need to be lambasted and embarrassed in a courtyard of customers. If you do choose to eat here stick to the rice dishes or meet dishes, aside from the burger as, from what we saw, they...
