Geralds Bar — Restaurant in San Sebastián

Loved the concept. Loved the food and the wine list was special. However, the service didn’t meet expectations.

Given the interesting wine list we adventured to ask the waitress for a recommendation of an interesting Txakoli. She came back with two options, one, by the bottle, that she said was considerably more expensive, 58 euros, and the other by the glass. We asked for a taster of the Txakoli by the glass, while we decided. She insisted on taking the wine list back. I said- “I still need the list as am still looking and we haven’t even ordered food yet!” but she took it away. We decided to have the Txakoli by the bottle that was recommended to make this easy for her as by that point we realised she didn’t know much about wine. It was great. The disappointment came after, when in the bill the bottle was €65. A reasonable price for a quality bottle of wine, but a shame that the waitress didn’t take responsibility for her mistake. She went to double check the price in the menu, and came back saying that it was listed at €65 and that it may have been her mistake but that’s what it was.

I shouldn’t feel the need to look up prices quoted in the menu or wine list after I’ve been informed by the waitress. If she had said the price was X in the first instance but wasn’t sure, she should have double checked and let us know, and is she didn’t, she should have taken responsibility for the mistake.

Hola Bella, qué tal? Debo ser muy negado para la tecnología, pero no consigo responder a tu comentario sin tener que modificar mi reseña. Pero bueno, valoro más la conversación generada que la reseña en sí.

Primero de todo, agradecerte tu respuesta, aprecio que lo hayas hecho. Pues valoro mucho tu restaurante y aprecio que ante una mala experiencia se me de una contestación.

Siento que te haya sentado tan mal mi opinión, pero a mí como cliente también me entristece ver que mi sitio por excelencia de la ciudad en los últimos años, el lugar que recomiendo a todo amigo que acude a Donosti, pìerda (bajo mi punto de vista) parte se su esencia y su calidad. Vaya, que deje de enamorarme.

Te cuento lo sucedido en detalle. Como comentaba, he ido unas seis o siete veces a Geralds en los últimos tres años. Las elecciones de los platos, siempre muy similares. Dos de los tres platos de verduras con algún tipo de queso o crema que soléis tener en la carta, el plato de pasta (recuerdo uno con conejo, otro de calamares con limón....) o la carne / pescado que haya. Aprox por persona 30€, con una copa de vino, genial.

El otro día: unas vainas con ajoblanco y melocotón muy ricas (17€ creo recordar, bien). Luego unos espárragos blancos con perrochicos que no nos gustaron nada, estaban crudos y no tenian nada de especial (similar a comer un champiñón en crudo) a un precio de 22€ (algo que me parece un poco excesivo por la materia prima). Y por último, un picantón con patatas por creo 34€, pues no habia el pescado de ese precio ya, y la pasta que ofreciais era con pesto y nos apetecía algo con carne o pescado. Un poco excesivo para ser pollo asado, creo yo. Un poco de vino, el más barato. Total 100€ por una cena que, bajo mi punto de vista, no era una cena de 50€ por persona.

Creo que eres consciente de que cuando hablo de "sitio para extranjeros" para nada lo hago refiriéndome a que me importe si el que sirve o está sentado en la mesa de al lado tiene una nacionalidad u otra. No voy a entrar en ese juego porque me parece algo ridículo, más si me conocieses a mí y mis orígenes. Sino de lo que popularmente de conoce como "sitio de guiris". Haciendo alusión a que un lugar pierde autenticidad por su turistificacion y los precios son más altos de los frecuentados por locales.

Comprendo que quieras ganar más dinero con tu local, es el principal propósito de un negocio, y entiendo que los precios vayan subiendo (IPC, alquileres, etc.) pero me parece un poco desproporcionado pasar de pagar 30€ a casi el doble un año después por algo similar. Por eso hablo de "sitio para extranjeros", porque a un estadounidense, francés o británico, generalmente con mayor poder adquisitivo que aquí, le llame menos la atención pagar 35€ por un plato de picantón con patatas o de 22€ por uno de verduras sencillas.

Siendo justo, para nada creo que sea un sitio de 2/5, por eso lo acabo de cambiar. Actué mal e impulsivamente. Y además, seguiré yendo a Geralds más veces, es de mis lugares favoritos, y lo seguiré recomendando, Solo espero que me vuelva a...

Sometimes you come across the perfect restaurant for a time and place. For us it was Gerard's Bar on a rainy Sunday. It has such a lively buzz and the perfect interior; a great old fashioned bar, wood clad walls, Thonet chairs, crisp white table cloths and wonderful graphic posters on the walls. All that would be window dressing but for the food, which was delicious, and the wine, which came from a perfectly chosen list. The menu changes frequently so our recommendations may not be available when you eat there, but if they are serving quail with beetroot don't hesitate to order it. The smoked tuna Nicoise is glorious and the runner bean salad with nectarines is superlative. Service is friendly and impeccable. So great to be given other restaurant suggestions by the Gerard's' team and to be made to feel so at home. If you like smart and shiny restaurants this isn't the place for you, but if you like great atmosphere and exemplary cooking you've got to try this...
