Santa Cruz de Tenerife boasts a vibrant culinary landscape, setting expectations high for both locals and visitors alike. Amidst, Restorante El Mirador in Corte Ingles, that seems to envision itself as a standout, but the reality is more of a cautionary tale.
At 30€ per head (not including entrées or dessert), one wouldn't expect to dine with the gods, but a certain standard is presumed. El Mirador, however, seems to be in a hurry to debunk that. Basics like clean glasses and plates, taken for granted elsewhere, here are seen as an afterthought.
Wine, the liquid poetry of dinner, was served, after I asked for a cleaner glass, with a casualness that bordered on negligence. Denying clients the initial taste of wine is a rookie move you'd perhaps expect in a back-alley bar, but in a restaurant with ambitions? It's embarrassingly out of place.
The single traditional spanish croquette that arrived as an amuse-bouche was the lone, dim light in this tunnel of disappointment. Alas, it was soon overshadowed by the farcical act of flooding the table with miniatures water bottles without inquiring about preference, piling up as if it was some comedic act.
Now, let's dissect the so-called ‘seared garlic sirloin cubes.’ To begin with, naming it a 'cube' suggests precision, attention to detail, and care. The reality? Randomly scattered pieces of meat that seemed confused about their own identity, which wouldn't know garlic if it was hit by a truck.
The disparate cooking levels across the meat were baffling, some parts verging on raw, others overdone. Calling it uneven would be charitable. A smattering of what looked like afterthought potatoes did no favors. The dish was more reminiscent of a rushed, last-minute home meal than a centerpiece of a 30€ experience, a final testament to their glaring lack of finesse and expertise.
Finding the restaurant is its own kind of ordeal, as it is tucked away mysteriously in Corte Ingles, above another restaurant’s which noise kept bleeding inside — a poorly chosen, albeit fitting soundtrack to a faltering performance.
The cherry on this underwhelming sundae? A panoramic view that boasts an industrial port and a bus terminal. Hardly the stuff of dreams, especially in a locale as beautiful as Tenerife.
In summation, Restorante El Mirador is a dining catastrophe, a stain on the fabric of Santa Cruz's illustrious culinary tapestry. It doesn't just miss the mark; it seems almost oblivious to where the mark is.
