NB! Mainly a semla review.
I'm definitely a bit of a Semla-fan and went on a semla-crawl this weekend and Svedjan came highly recommended. Having tried their regular Semla, I'm impressed but underwhelmed and at least for me it only makes it to a top 10 spot in Stockholm with several locations such as Bergstrands bageri, Tegners and Lillebrors making regular semlor that exceed those from Svedjan in my personal opinion.
What makes Svedjan's stand out is its somewhat unique look were it looks like the whipped cream is about to flow across the bottom bun but it is in fact whipped to near perfection but not sweetened. But after having tasted the almond paste filling, I understand why and here is the biggest disappointment for me personally. At least for me, their homemade almond filling tastes like caramel and/or cola-fudge and has the consistency of runny fudge (not to my appreciation). Especially when I compare to the regular semla from Bergstrands (see photo two with Bergstrand's semla on the left and Svedjan's on the right, though I do prefer the darker estetisk of Svedjan's).
I also tried their "Morgon bulle" which was outstanding and probably makes the top spot for me in comparison to the competition.
This was a take-away so did not stay in the café but there seems to be plenty of room. I came on a Saturday morning at 9 (when they open) and there was already a lengthy line. It took me 15min of waiting to be served and as I stepped outside at 9.15 the length of the line was twice as long as...
Read moreSvedjan Bageri is a hidden gem that combines Scandinavian simplicity with a warm, inviting atmosphere. The highlight of my visit was their semla buns—a Swedish classic done to perfection. The cardamom-infused bun was soft yet sturdy, providing the ideal base for the luscious whipped cream and rich almond paste. A delightful addition was the crushed nuts, which introduced a subtle crunch and elevated the overall experience.
The presentation was thoughtful and elegant, with a light dusting of powdered sugar that made the semla as visually appealing as it was delicious. Paired with a cup of expertly brewed coffee served in earthy ceramic cups, the combination was a true indulgence.
The ambiance at Svedjan Bageri is cozy yet vibrant, with modern decor and a bustling energy that adds to its charm. While the space can get a bit crowded, it only underscores the bakery’s popularity and high-quality offerings.
Svedjan Bageri is a must-visit for those who appreciate artisanal baked goods with a modern twist. Whether you’re there for a quiet coffee break or a treat with friends, it’s the kind of place that leaves you wanting more.

Read moreDecent fika (esp. cinnamon puff pastry), but t e r r i b l e coffee (esp. espresso). Afaict the baristas dgaf about coffee, and like neither each other or their job, which shines through in both the coffee and the general demeanor. Just a very weird and off-putting vibe that makes one wonder about the management culture.
They have no serving trays, no high chairs for small children, and no lactose free milk—definite air of cost-cutting as well a culture of hostility to families.
Fairly spacious venue with lots of natural light—and a large bathroom—as well as a location right next to Zinkensdamm metro station are to their credit. But after three decidedly weird experiences, I think I'm done. There are better—and less...
