Udden Japanese Cuisine — Restaurant in Västerås kommun

Visited because of the really high rating here on google reviews and the super good comments, so had really high expectations. The interior looked great, outdoor seating area not so great with single use chopsticks and no dishes for the soy sauce. Whole menu looked delicious, we chose the premium sushi set, rainbow roll and the roll with soft-shell crab. First disappointment was that there were no alcoholic beverages. Also there was no one else beside us. People came for take-away only so it became clear that it's not a place to chill and eat dinner at with a glass of wine. The dishes arrived looking magnificent and very beautifully arranged, but sadly that's where my compliments end. We didn't enjoy the sushi rice. The texture felt a bit too sticky or mushy. Maybe it wasn't very fresh? And could have been better seasoned in my opinion. The nigiris in premium set were pretty ok, but we unfortunately did not enjoy any of the maki rolls. I guess the rice was the downfall of them all, because it all tasted quite bland, not something you would just wanna keep eating. Also the maki pieces in premium set were so unpalatable for my personal taste, that I was grabbing for water trying to get rid of the taste in my mouth. My husband finished all the dishes cause he was super-hungry, but was disappointed aswell for the money spent. After we had finished, we were discussing what to say to the waiter if he asked how we liked our food, but he never asked. We also waited for the check for at least 20 minutes, after which my husband went inside to pay, cause we were tired of waiting. All in all I guess it's an ok sushi place for take-away, if you happen to enjoy the taste 🤷🏻‍♀️ We personally didn't. To compare we had sushi from VICHI in Västerås the week before and it was ten times better. So we decided on giving Udden just one star, which might seem unfair, but so does the deceivingly high review score here on google. Maybe it helps someone to avoid the...

🔸️ Ebi Tempura 🤩🤩🤩🤩 Great starter - freshly prepared, long, plump fried panko prawns with drizzles of Sriracha and mayonnaise. The prawns were firm to the bite and the panko crust was delicious.

🔸️ Tonkatsu 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 Very good Tonkatsu with steamed Japanese rice. Good cut of pork that tastes close to what we had in Tokyo. However, the meat is on the leaner side and meat is not marbled. The panko crust was crunchy and the highlight of the dish.

🔸️ Katsu Curry 🤩🤩🤩🤩 The fried chicken cutlet with Japanese curry also uses the same panko technique. This is a warm appetising dish. The steamed Japanese rice is aldente and soaks up the mild curry sauce that has small cubes of soft carrots and potatoes.

🔸️ Sushi 🤩🤩🤩🤩 The sushi is also good. Fish was fresh and the sushi was filling, tasty and beautifully plated. The rice is more vinegarish here. Miso soup is not included.

🔸️Mango Calpis 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 For drinks, recommend the Mango Calpis - this is fizzy Calpis with mango jelly. The taste is a milky fizzy, sprite-like cold soda with bits of sweet mango jelly. The taste surprised us.

🔸️ Matcha Chiffon Cake / Matcha Parfait 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 For desserts, recommend the Matcha Chiffon cake with red bean paste or Matcha Parfai.

🔸️ Matcha Cheesecake 🤩🤩🤩 The matcha cheesecake is interesting to try once.

🔸️ Genmai Chai 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 To wrap up the meal, the Genmai Chai (hot green tea) that comes in a large pot is good value, enough for sharing and great to help digestion.

Really cozy and nice smaller restaurant. It serves a few different plates of sushi, 2 ramen's and some yakiniku and tonkotsu. We ordered a plate of sushi, spicy miso ramen and kimchi soup.

The sushi rice was nice and fresh together with the salmon and shrimp. Sadly the tuna got a sprinkle of garnish that overpowered the fish so you could only taste that. Besides that the sushi was good

The ramen was indeed a little spicy but nothing that one couldn't handle. Nuddles were a bit thin, but besides that...
