Paulo served us a fabulous lunch (a cheese board and a meat board with wine and beer) accompanied with enthusiastic information about the various cheeses and their origins, as well as introducing us to the local dessert specialty of double creme and meringue, which was magical! He offered us a box for the plentiful leftovers as he suggested we explore the town of Gruyères' other offerings. It is rare to find a restaurant server who truly enjoys his job enough to engage so positively with his customers. From suggesting items on the menu to explaining them when delivered, it really was an enjoyable experience. And we observed that he was the same with his other customers, without it slowing or inhibiting his performance. The restaurant was clean, efficient, and all of the items we saw served around us were very appetizing-we wished we could have stayed in the area longer to try more of the food! After visiting the historic town and castle for the afternoon, as well as the museums he recommended, we returned for coffee and dessert. We were served by Vivianne(?) who was equally helpful, recommending and explaining a local dessert that included a pear tart.
We really were impressed with the courtesy and service we received at this cafe and highly recommend a visit! It was one of the best parts of our trip to...
Read moreWorst customer service ever. Don’t waste your time here. They told us to come back an hour later and expected us not to eat anywhere else so we could order more from them. Who in their right mind would make a family starve at 12 PM just to fit their rules?
We had already eaten lunch somewhere else while waiting for a table and wanted to try their cheese, so we ordered fondue and rösti. The waiter gave us attitude for ordering “too little,” then even took away 2 out of 4 plates. When my parents returned from the souvenir shop and tried some, he gave us attitude again.
We stayed only about 30 minutes (service was slow anyway) because we felt completely unwelcome. Had they politely explained we needed to order more, I would have understood. Instead, the waiter kept throwing sarcastic comments at me and repeatedly said, “You think it’s funny?” when I was only responding to him. The food was below average too — Harder Kulm’s is far better. Avoid at all cost and you are better off...
Read moreThis may be due to a difference in culture, but this was not an enjoyable experience from a customer service perspective.
When I first arrived, there were about 20 people waiting outside the restaurant. I joined the crowd and no one ever came by to take my name, talk to me, etc. After waiting in line for a while, I left to go through the museum.
I came back and there was no line. I waited again, and again no one ever came to check me in, ask how many, seat me, etc. I walked in and went to the bar and had the same experience: no one even acknowledged me.
I came back several hours later and went straight to the bar. I told a server I just wanted a salad and she very rudely told me I needed to sit at a table and someone would take my order. I asked why I couldn’t sit at the bar and she said that was fine.
After that the staff was friendly toward me, but it was definitely not a great...
