We stopped into the Oberland Restaurant on our walk back from all the waterfalls, and luckily made it in before the late afternoon closure common with all the restaurants in between lunch and dinner. This is a fantastic place for fondue! Three of us had the "Oberland" fondue which is made with a creamier local cheese plus adds 50g more cheese per person. My son had a chicken and salad dish which was also excellent. We sat on the fantastic front patio which has a full coverage awning for the slightly rainy day we had. The fondue was exceptional with more than enough cheese and bread to flll our tired empty stomachs. The presentation also included hot baby potatoes to dip and a platter of scallions, garlic, and mushrooms to enhance each fondue fork of cheese goodness. Plus don't forget the fresh pepper grinder - the waiter ground pepper on our plates to also dip into and why haven't I thought of that at home! Delicious!. Start to finish this was the best restaurant experience we've had in Europe in years. Usually there is always at least one thing wrong at most European restaurants such as being ignored, hard to get attention for a table, very long wait to take order, food itself, never asking if more drinks are needed, and long long waits to get a bill and cash out. The Oberland was excellent on all these cases. Friendly staff greeted and seated us, took our order in prompt fashion when we were ready, presented us with excellent food, brought us requested new drinks quickly, and I got my credit card run through with ease at a good price. This was the best full meal we've had at the same price or less than all the others here in Switzerland. Thank...
Read moreThis restaurant was one my girlfriend really wanted to go to. It was recommended by Rick Steves as well as our hotel (our hotel didn't have a restaurant attached). We made reservations for our second day in town. When we showed up we got our table fairly quickly and we're seated by what I assume was the restaurant GM or evening manager. When our waitress came she got the carrot and ginger soup, which my girlfriend really liked, quite quickly.
Unfortunately this is where the positive things end. When we'd ordered our wine they were out (understandable) but our second selection of white wine was warm, which wasn't disclosed until after I'd been served. We would have ordered something else to drink if we'd known before the cork was popped. It took quite a while to finally receive our fondue (over 15 minutes after her soup bowl had been cleared). Two other tables that ordered after us had gotten served long before us. Having never tried fondue myself I wasn't impressed, my girlfriend didn't really think it was very good either and she has had fondue multiple times back home. The flavor was forgettable, and the mix-in didn't arrive when the cheese did but about 5 minutes after (why??). We were hoping dessert was going to save the day so we got the apple strudel to split. The crust was a little rubbery like it had been tossed in the microwave and the flavor overall was only "ok" to me.
For the recommendations this restaurant had been given we were pretty disappointed with both food and service was was a far cry from the previous night at another hotel's restaurant which was our favorite in the two weeks we'd been in Europe as of...
Read moreWhen we showed up at 6:50 we asked if they have room for two, the hostess looked hesitant to answer us and after a moment looked around and was like "here". We were like okay well come back in 10 minutes (we had to go to the Coop) and before I could even finish my sentence she was like "yeah yeah come back later", she couldn't wait to get us out. I don't know if this is because we're black and yellow.
We came back later at 7, the waitress asked us to go outside to ask the hostess, and she's like "oh yeah it's tough yeah? I'm sorry there is no room there's nothing we can do". I asked if we could make a reservation, she said no and was just like "yeah maybe when you come back at 8" (this place does take reservations). Meanwhile as we were leaving and 10 steps away they sat a whole group of 6, and another few groups of 2s that just walked in off the street. Even if they had reservations, why didn't the hostess reserve our table for us when we asked and said we'd be back? She was NOT busy when we first got there. From start to finish she just looked like she didn't want to seat us. Maybe it's because of our race or because we looked like hikers, but then the rest of the town looked like hikers.
In all the bad reviews the owner like to mention award winning, I guess just award winning food not service or...
