Looks like a good deal but most hock items are overpriced for what you get. We ordered a portion of the feet (90ntd), a portion of the knuckles (110ntd), a portion of the upper hock (140ntd) and an upper hock "bian dang" (set menu) (140ntd). The feet is about $3USD and had maybe three bites of chewy skin. The knuckles, at $3.75 USD, had even less edible parts than the feet. My friend remarked sarcastically that the skin must have been so "fall off the bone" that most fell off the plate as well. The upper hock had no bones and seemed to be a pretty good deal at $4.75USD relative to the knuckles and feet...until we saw that the set menu had the same amount of hock in it as ordering the hock separately (both were at 140ntd) . So, ordering the hock sections separately is not worth it. Get the set menu. And for less than it costs to eat three bites of feet or knuckle at this place, you can get a set menu from almost anywhere else in Taiwan. Taste wise, only ok. They mass produce so don't expect the taste of the hock parts being cooked for hours. Sides from the set menu (bamboo, egg, tofu) were pretty good, else if those tasted as mediocre as the hock parts we would have...
Read moreIt's been decades since my last meal here, as I mostly follow a plant-based diet.
The braised pork is super tender and creamy melting in my mouth without feeling overly greasy. Surprisingly, the braised tofu is much greasier than the pork. I originally ordered plain tofu, but the waiter served me braised tofu instead. When I asked if there had been a mistake, he casually responded, "Oh, the plain tofu is sold out. We can refund you if you don't want the braised tofu." Since it was the busy lunch rush, I decided to just accept it. Aside from that, The braised pork rice and the braised bamboo shoots were both delicious.
The restaurant has separate lines for eat-in and takeout. For eat-in, you queue outside for your turn to order and pay first, then get a receipt along with a beeping device to alert you when the table is ready for you. I got there around 1 PM and waited about 10 minutes to order. After that, it took me another 15 minutes before my table was ready.
Overall, the restaurant is well-organized and runs efficiently despite the...
Read moreThis is highly touted on the web. During opening hours a long line is a given. They also has some unexpected closings. The first time I attempted, it was a Sunday and they were closed. The second time was a Monday, and they closes on every second and fourth Mondays -- yep, reminds me of street cleaning schedules in the US. The third attempt I succeeded but I had to go it alone, preempting a dinner arrangement. Also, I went in at 6:45 pm and they were sold out of 3 out of 4 menus. I settled with the basic pig knuckles.
I probably won't come back. Yes it's popular; and it's rather unique because even though it specializes just pig knuckles, it's a big operation with respectable ambiance as opposed to typical street stalls. However, its staff is quite rude and take customers for granted. Also, unless you're a pig knuckle gourmet, you can't really taste the difference. All considered, I...
