On a recent Monday evening, my friends and I visited Somboon Seafood at its Ratchada branch, a once-iconic spot in Bangkok’s vibrant “second Chinatown,” known for drawing Thai and Chinese tourists with its signature curry crab and crab meat fried rice. Located in a prime area, this branch was historically one of the chain’s finest, but it seems to have lost some of its former sparkle.

We ordered the famed curry crab, which lived up to its reputation with rich, flavorful curry and tender crab meat. The crab meat fried rice was solid, though not exceptional, while the black pepper crab was average, lacking the punch we expected. Disappointingly, the steamed garlic shrimp was overcooked and fell below par. The service was a bright spot, with attentive and friendly staff earning a strong 4 stars, despite the bustling dining room. However, the prices felt steep for the inconsistent quality, making the value for money less compelling.

While Somboon Seafood at Ratchada retains some of its charm, it no longer feels like a must-visit. We’d consider returning if in the area, but the crave-worthy magic has faded.

I have visited many times, including their branches. I am generally satisfied with the food, although the taste varies. The service is usually neither good nor bad, never be impressive nor poor, but the serve this time was simply terrible.

Perhaps they messed up the seafood sauce, or they ran out and the sauce that normally comes with foods was not served and we had to eat our cockles without ANY sauce🤮🤮 Of course it wasn't good and I kept asking a woman staff for seafood sauce, but she insisted that she could not serve a sauce for us.

Finally another man brought it to me after I asked for it more than 10 times at the end.

My daughter advised me to bring "My sauce" from home next time😂(attached photo is the one she showed me at home😂😂)

Seafood restaurant never serve seafood sauce, amazing Thailand😳😳

I'm not that fussy, and would have liked just a minimum service and courtesy, hope I won't pick terrible ones next time,...

Visited the highly raved about outlet at Ratchada but was let down as the portion sizes were too small. We ordered their largest sized curry crab, river prawn glass noodles and morning glory for 3 pax.

curry crab was nothing special, tasted like butter crab instead. Flavour wasnt strong and couldnt really taste any curry really

portion :( was really small even for 3 pax, wasnt satisfying

price: the crab alone was 1590bt/ 59sgd which isnt tooo bad but for bkk standards this was quite pricey and not worth it imo because there really wasnt much meat

crab wasn’t cracked properly and the crab itself wasnt big enough to fit in the shell cracker

Drinks: we ordered lime juice & mango frappe. meh. lime juice was straight lime, no sugar, dont recommend.

All in all, experience was meh think there are probably better seafood places you could visit in bkk to make a better bang...

Sawadee khap...i was expecting this sound when the firstvtime coming in into this place bubi dont get it. But it is very nice to come to this place, the taste of the foods is good. The crab is quite amazing because all we need to do is to have it in into our mouth without need to broke or cut the shells (it is clean to eat) and the taste is amazing. I got the third floor and it is very nice to see people eating and chatting at every floor i passed. It is a tourist destination spot i think, it is quite crowded. The manggoes sticky rice, it's delicious. The table management i think should be re-manage maybe a meal after another meal has finished, because the table is too full of foods and plates. The cleanliness is good, it is very recommended for all tourist to try it.
