I have never been so disappointed as I was with the Big Mamma Group of restaurants, walking out of the restaurant having paid 920 thb and starving I took a friend to the Tapas Restaurant at about 2.15 at the latest. I only live a block away, I have seen a lot of Thai people eating there & saw this as a recommendation. Not seeing the trading hours we went inside to be told they were on a break, to be fair the trading hours on the door did confirm this. We were told by very polite waitress we could go to Big Mamas Italian restaurant across the road. When we arrived at the Italian, we could not get the Tapas specials menu (which had a large selection of under 100thb choices). Instead we were only given the full tapas menu who's choices were all betwen 150 & 300thb. We selected 3 dishes, 2 of them looked lovely on the menu & largish. We waited 39 mins to get our meal, 2 tables who came in after us received there meals first. 1 table of 2 & 1 table of 4 people. Well I thougjt our meal must have been big or hard to cook which would account for the long delay. The first 2 dishes were 2 pieces each dish, half size brussetta type dishes, which were lovely but hardly worth over 100thb each. We also ordered a stir fry squid dish from the seafood tapas list which was small but acceptable, plus 2 melon shakes, the drink special. The best part of the meal for the price were the 2 melon shakes. Then after steering us to the more expensive option & under satisfying our hunger, they had the gaul to charge a service charge (an imposed tip to pay the staff wages). As a policy I won't eat at restaurants in Thailand which impose a service charge unless they are in 5 star hotels. The food was good quality the concept of sending customers to the much more expensive restaurant across the road & not providing the tapas special menu is appalling. When we left i said to my friend, "my wallet is lighter but my stomach is empty, where should we go now to eat." So we went to an Issan Thai restaurant down in umy building called The Dish & got 3 times the food at a similar quality for half the price rather than go home hungry. Some special sunday luncheon it was not!!! Thanks to the Big...
Read moreI’ve been to Big Mama many times with my friends and colleagues. It is a great restaurant to hang out and catch up with friends.
Food: There are many options- Italian, Thai-Italian fusion, Thai. I personally think the food is good yet not authentic Italian. My Italian husband didn’t enjoy it much though my friends and colleagues (Thai, American and Australia) find it tasty. For me, it’s good- I would give 4 out of 5 because of the variety.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere is great! It’s quite cosy and friendly. I would recommend you to book in advance because it could be full on Friday’s evening.
Location: It’s located in the city- Asoke. You can either take a BTS or Metro (underground) to Asoke/ Sukhumvit station and walk (approx 5mins). Cars aren’t recommended...I drove there once and it wasnt easy to find a parking. Plus, the traffic is terrible!
Price: It’s surely not cheap yet it’s kinda standard for a restaurant in the city and Italian food in BKK isnt cheap.
My favourite dishes would be lasagna, Thai fusion pasta, and many other more...just try haha. I once ordered a calzone...OMG it’s super huge!!!!! I had to share with a few people yet we couldn’t finish! It’s like a foot long calzone 😬 tasty though.
By the way, they don’t take cards, only cash. Nowadays you might be able to pay with mobile banking (Prompt Pay), most restaurants and shops accept mobile payment so you could try.
Last but not least. They sell alcohols, cocktails, mocktails. It’s alright. I’m not a drinker so cant have much...

In the evening we loved to get a pizza, because the BIG Mama Pizzeria was just around the corner from the Grand Mercure we went there. Quickly a bottle of Mollydooker The Boxer plugged in and five minutes later we were already sitting in the restaurant.
The BIG Mama Pizzeria is quite colourful and looks like a traditional pizzeria. In addition to the tables in the interior there are open air tables in front of the restaurant (but right on the street) - we made ourselves comfortable inside.
The service was friendly and attentive, but a bit confused. All food and (almost) all drinks were fast at the table.
Particularly noteworthy was the excellent garlic bread - plus a bowl of fresh chopped & spiced tomatoes to portion the own bruschetta. Since we had brought an excellent wine we ordered as drinks otherwise only still water and soda.
With a Tom Yam Goong and Nua Heng we also had a little Thai food here - both tasted delicious. As a starter, there was a -Tuna salad came along with two separate dressings - handcrafted good and except for the Tuna all fresh ingredients.
The steak shone unfortunately only with the side dishes - the meat itself was far too thin cut and it was not grilled to the point - but it is just a pizzeria.
The pizza, in this case salami, was delicious, but not a real highlight - at least the not saved on cheese. The salami was unfortunately quite tough to eat and could have tasted much better - maybe check if there is not something else on the market.
For dessert there was a panna cotta with blueberry - unfortunately it already turned sour, but that may happen at Asian temperatures - otherwise it looked good.
The prices were OK and so the BIG Mama Pizzeria is certainly a place where you can go in the evening to have a pizza.
Opposite there is a restaurant with "BIG Mama" in the name - I believe in the direction of Tex-Mex, but we have not been there yet.
Cheers, be sure to visit foodadvisorblog!
