Happy hour scam. Thursday 11 Jan 2024. Was a customer of the old Brown Sugar bar, that was located near Lumpini Park more than 15 years ago. Always an happy customer. Not today ! I don't know if it is the same owner or not but this is my experience last night. 3 foreigners enter the premise. We been teased by one of the staff of all the promotions available if we consume at that place. Happy hour from 7 to 8 pm, buy 2 get 1 free. Spend 6000 baht and get a free sparking wine bottle and other marketing stuff. Place looks good, Never been before here (knew only the previous location). Here we go, walk upstairs and sit on a table. We are the only table of 3 foreigners around 7 pm. We check the menu and choose the happy hour promotion available only for Chang beer. 1 bottle 170 baht. But 2 get 1 free from 7 to 8 pm.. We ordered Chang beer until we end up with 6 bottles consumed on the table. All orders made between 7 and 8 pm, before the singer starts his show at 8 pm. Around 8.20 pm we ask to pay the bill. It comes at 1070 baht. We look at each other and were wondering why so much. If we consume 6 beers been in happy hours you have 2 solutions : either pay 4 and get 2 free (4 X 170 + 7 % vat : 727 baht. Even if we have to add 10 % service charge it would be 795 baht and not 1070 as requested by the staff. 2nd solution : pay for 6 bottles and get 9 on the table : 6 you pay + 3 free ones.
We asked the manager to either have a lower bill or 3 extra beers to get our 9 beers in total as the bill was 1070 baht and we had no discount at all finaly, Even we ordered during the so called Happy hour timeframe. We were denied to have our 3 extra beers and instead everyone was confused and after minutes of failed explanations and negociation I paid the 1070 baht and we got only 6 bottles of Chang. We been screwed so last night and the Happy hour was just a scam, thus the 1 star review.
Would we believe they made a mistake ? Don't think so as they denied us to have 3 extra beers for free, even we were entitled to have, as we paid for 6 beers. For me it is more a scam. And the feeling is strong because only 8 total customers during the time we stayed. All customers were only foreigners, not a single Thai customer. Avoid at all cost for me now. Made me feel like at a ping pong show place we're scam were popular back in the days in the red light district of Bangkok.
Shame because Brown Sugar was a nice establishment in my memory when it was near Lumpini Park. The staff last night in soi nana (near Hualongpong train station) was nice, we got free peanuts 2 times and the singer was good. But we got screwed 30 % more or less on the bill. And no we won't come back nor recommend to our friends the place because the taste is too...
Read moreMy party arrived at 8:00pm and we were early enough to get a table. Over the next hour the place filled up. We ordered drinks and snacks. The nachos came in a small bowl and were nothing like nachos in the States; just a few tortilla chips with some melted white cheese and some dipping sauce on the side. Very disappointing. The pork sate skewers, on the other hand, were good. They had quite a selection of beers including both imported and domestic microbrews.
This is a jazz club and that is what they played. I am not particularly knowledgeable about jazz so I can't say what style they played. I liked the pieces with recognizable melodies or at least tunes that had melodies. Some of them were a style that sounds like random notes, a type of jazz I really don't like, and there was too much of it for my taste. Also, the music was way too loud and not only made conversations impossible but started giving me a headache. The volume was more like what I expect at a rock concert. Overall, between the high prices (understandable with live music), the skimpy nachos, and the deafening volume levels, this is a place I will...
Read moreWe had our best night in Bangkok at Brown Sugar. Great music, amazing atmosphere, attentive service, delicious food & drinks and an opportunity for a glimpse into the fascinating local Thai Jazz scene.
I was travelling to Bangkok with a friend who is confined to a wheelchair. It was her first time travelling outside Cambodia and my first time helping a friend work out accessibility issues on a trip. There are a couple low steps at the entrance but we were warmly welcomed at the door, helped over the steps, and assured that there was a lift to the 2nd floor where all the action was. The lift turned out to be a service lift and several items needed to be moved around in order to make it accessible for us. The staff were all so helpful and accommodating despite the inconvenience we brought them on a busy night.
Without their kindness and going out of their way for us we would have missed this super fun night and we're...
