Walking into TEP BAR is less like entering a bar and more like accidentally falling into a very stylish, incredibly rhythmic, traditional Thai time-warp. 🤯 I swear, the air itself tastes like history and lemongrass! The ambiance hits you immediately: flickering golden light, the low thrum of traditional instruments, and the realization that your normal life outside is suddenly very boring. 🇹🇭✨ The live Pong Lang music was so captivating, I almost forgot how to scroll through Instagram. My hips started doing things they haven't done since my last very ambitious aerobics class in 1998. It’s authentic, it’s vibrant, and if you don't feel a little bit cooler just by existing here, you might need a spirit-level check. Absolutely an essential stop! 🎶🕺 Now, let's talk about the beverages. They call them cocktails; I call them potions of delightful destruction. 🍸🔮 I ordered a mysterious drink that had a whole herb garden floating in it, and after the first sip, I was pretty sure I could speak fluent Thai and had solved at least two global crises. The Thai-style Yadong (traditional herbal liquor) shots come highly recommended—if you enjoy feeling like a friendly dragon breathing fire into the night. 🔥🐉 Warning: These drinks are strong, delicious, and will make you text ex-partners. (Don't worry, the atmosphere is so intoxicating, you'll immediately regret the text and delete it before hitting 'send'.) The flavors are so unique, it’s a total flavor adventure for your poor, unsuspecting taste buds. 🌶️🤤 The staff are absolute rockstars, navigating the controlled cultural chaos with grace and perfectly poured spirits. 💁♀️💫 If you are looking for a sterile, boring pub with predictable pop music, turn right around and go home. TEP BAR is an EXPERIENCE. It's the kind of place you bring a visitor to show them, "This is Thailand's cultural soul, and it has a high-proof tolerance." ✅ Go here, drink something scary/wonderful, enjoy the beat, and leave with a slight wobble and a heart full of Thai joy. Five out of five stars, would spontaneously combust culturally again!...
Read moreWent there on a friend’s recommendation. You need to get a taxi to get there since it’s but out of the way from the main drags in BKK. Also, you may need to search in google map carefully to find the place as the entrance is through some back alley as we discovered after going all the way around the building. At the door was a guy whose expression was like - do you really want to come in? But that could purely be my misread.
Place is set up on the back wing of a narrow two story building. A traditional Thai music was being performed, as that seems to be their main gig, a few inches away from the bar. We were seated between them and the bar and since the place is rather small (“cozy”) we felt almost the part of the act haha..
Look, if this is your first time in Thailand this music could be interesting but for it was a bit too ethnic for a bar setting and wore off rather quickly. Don’t get me wrong traditional Thai music is very nice but it has its place.
We ordered one of the bartenders highly recommended shots combo with local herbs. This came in three flavors but each only half full. More on the flavor later but wait.....shot glass only half full?? As is, a full shot is a barely a gulp - half a shot is more like a sip .....c’mon!!!!! That’s three table spoons of sips for close to $12?? This would be in par with extra fine Cognacs for the price. I later noticed that they did list on the menu that they serve only half full. Not sure why this silliness.
And as for flavor they all tasted as if its brewed with tree barks with some strong alcohol on the edges. Aftertaste lingered and came in waves haha.....
They had some craft beers on bottle also. But these days it seems anyone who can brew some suds in their basement can easily slap a trendy “craft beer” label with $10 or so price tag. I tried one and in that sense it was nothing out of the ordinary.
Given all this, no disrespect, but I find it hard to give it...
Read moreTEP BAR is more than just a bar; it's a Cultural Bar of Thailand located in Bangkok's vibrant Soi Nana (Chinatown area). It offers a truly unique nightlife experience by blending authentic Thai traditions with the craft cocktail scene.
🍾Atmosphere: Rustic Charm Meets Live Thai Music The bar’s decor is styled to evoke the 'Golden Age of Thailand', featuring exposed brick, dim lighting, and antique-looking jars of Yadong (herbal spirits). This gives it a cool, mysterious, and slightly nostalgic vibe. The main attraction is the live Thai traditional music. Talented young musicians play instruments like the ranad (xylophone) and various percussions. Crucially, the music isn't just background noise—it's lively, engaging, and often features Ramwong (Thai folk dancing) tunes that get the crowd tapping their feet or even dancing along. It's an energetic fusion of old-school sound and modern socializing.
🍸Drinks: A Culinary Adventure Your selection perfectly highlights the bar's focus on local Thai ingredients. You skipped the raw shots of Yadong but dove deep into their signature cocktails which skillfully use Thai rice wine (Sato) and other local flavors (Pandan, Plum, herbs). Each drink is a thoughtful creation, offering a complexity of flavor that you won't find at typical international bars.
The experience is well worth the premium price tag. Just be sure to book a table in advance as it...
