WARNING! When we were in Phuket we were two times at Mama Nang. We were amazed by the friendly waitress and the delicious food the first time (!) which is why we went there a second time together with 4 friends (6 people in total). It was our last evening where we were all together, so we wanted to enjoy a special dinner. I got lobster and the elderly couple ate tiger prawn. The other three had fish and shrimps. 3 of us, including me and the elderly couple got all in the night around 2 am in the night food poisoning. They got nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. I got all of it plus fever and the worst stomach pain of my life. Tenesmesus over 15 hours. They were so painful I even had to puke from pain and I had to scream and cry during the night. I was lying in bed the whole next day, which was a pity as it was our last full day of our vacation. Next day in the morning, when I was able leaving our hotel room again, I went to mama nang to tell them that they have to be sure that their products are fresh and then I asked for a refund for my spoiled lobster. And Again: the waitress was very nice and empathic. But she cannot make these decisions so she had to ask the owner. I guess “mama”. .. That women appeared very angry and then she discussed quite aggressive with the waitress and then I had to wait 20 min until a big guy came just to show me the screen of his phone saying “medical certificate”. How was I supposed to leave the hotel during the day when I was poisoned and couldn’t really move or leave the close-by toilet for longer than 10 min? And the day I complained I had to catch our flight home during the opening hours of the doctor. He said: “well .. she doesn’t care...“ Wow… So I was really shocked about that missing empathy and that she, the older lady, didn’t care at all for the health and well-being of her customers. Terrible. Also the guy could have enforced compensation for this horrific night and my sick day. I feel bad for the waitress though. She did a nice job at all times and was also very kind when I told her about the situation. She should work somewhere better! So in total: it’s a shame how the situation was handled and unfortunately I cannot recommend to eat tiger prawn or especially lobster there. In my personal experience you have a 50% chance to end up with severe food poisoning and get even treated badly afterwards by the owners/managers. There are many other restaurants next to each other where you can go to instead which you can recognize by different colors of the sheets and shirts. Just go a few steps further to another one if you want to enjoy tiger prawn or lobster. Mama Nangs Restaurant had red sheets and the waiters wear...
Read moreThis was a difficult restaurant to rate. We had a good time and we liked the staff but there were a couple of issues
We had the lemon sea bass on recommendation as being super fresh. It was. We asked for it without coriander. “No coriander”, we were assured, and the manager was very proud of the presentation when it came. The problem is it came covered is coriander chilli relish. The manager denied it was coriander. But coriander is a strong herb and the taste is unmistakable.
It was added after the fish was cooked so we were able to scrape it off and asked for chilli without coriander. The replacement had parsley, the fish was delicious. We were just disappointed with the way they handled the situation. There was clearly a mistake here and instead of trying to fix it, they hoped we would just accept it.
If you have serious anaphylactic allergies, you might want to think twice about dining here. Fortunately we had anti allergy tabs with us.
The setting is nice on the beach, the service was good and we did have a good time.
The shocker came when we got the bill. We’ve eaten at some fancy resultants in Thailand including 3 different Michelin star restaurants and this was the most expensive meal we’ve had.
We had whole fish at several other restaurants and the ones that didn’t have set prices ask what size we wanted so we knew how much we were in for upfront. If you are ordering fish I suggest you tell the waiter how much you are looking to spend to avoid the surprise...
