Bai Toey Chicken Rice — Restaurant in Surat Thani Province

The food here is absolutely outstanding and authentic!!! Even my wife stopped complaining about the food when we ate there and she wanted to eat there every day, what is totally unusual. She is a Thai chef as well and cooks better food than you will find in most restaurants all over Thailand. We traveled Thailand for about 6 months from North to South. Eating mostly in local restaurants and markets but also went for Michelin restaurants and for sure also eating in many beach front restaurants on the islands. I think in the end we eat in more than 200 different places but only 10 to 20 deserve a 5 star rating for the food. And this little restaurant is definitely in the top 5 all over the country. Prices are way to cheap for that taste so we gave them huge tips. So if you are in koh tao, use your chance and try as many dishes as you can and feel the real thaitaste. Dinner at Bai Toey Chicken Rice was an experience to remember! This is a true local gem—no frills, no fancy décor, just authentic Thai flavours served in a rustic, no-nonsense setting. The ambiance is as real as it gets, complete with a few questionable electrical setups and a staff that operates with a “get the job done” efficiency rather than warm hospitality. But honestly, none of that mattered once the food arrived.

The Penang Curry was absolutely phenomenal—rich, deeply flavorful, and perfectly balanced. Days later, we’re still thinking about it, craving another bite. It’s the kind of dish that lingers in your memory in the best way.

We did not have a good experience here.

Yes, the food came out quickly. Yes it is cheap.

The reason it is quick and cheap is that everything is cooked earlier in the day, stored in large containers, reheated and served when ordered. Everything we ordered had not been reheated enough was served cold. We had to ask for it to be heated more, and it came back dried up and tough.

There is also the risk, especially in this humid climate, of hot food that has cooled down and being reheated having bacteria grow on it.

Not worth the poor quality and risk of food poisoning for quick and cheap.
